Relax by the pool, dive through subaquatic caves and learn about the region’s fascinating past through museums and archeological sites.
Cancún is located on the Yucatán peninsula on the Gulf of Mexico. Just off the coast is a huge coral reef with some of the best dive sites in all of Mexico. Head to the beach in Playa Tortugas for a little snorkelling and explore amongst the colourful fish and underwater plant life. Take a boat out from one of the many dive centres to swim with dolphins at Playa Delfines, an activity that still tops the majority of bucket lists. The Gulf is a paradise for fishermen too.
The area around Cancún was of great importance to the Mayans, the original inhabitants of the region. You will find several archaeological sites of great historical importance, such as the El Rey ruins in the heart of the hotel zone of Cancún. Visit the Museo Maya de Cancun to learn more about the rich history of the area and to discover why the Mayans thought the world would end in 2012 (hint: they didn’t really).
Take the ferry from the beach in the city to the nearby Isla Mujeres, a charming island that’s not as touristy as Cancún. Wander through the pristine jungle in the Garrafon Natural Reef Park or relax on one of the island’s quiet beaches.
It’s location makes Cancún hot all year round, being pleasantly warm in the winter months. The most popular months to visit are December through April. In the summer months it can be very hot there and in early autumn begins the rainy season, so these periods are less suited for a vacation. Cancún has excellent public transport links and most people speak English, so you shouldn’t get lost. The city is considered one of the safest in Mexico for tourists.
