Puerto de la Cruz is 19 miles (30km) west of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and 56 miles (91km) from Tenerife Airport. Overlooked by the volcanic cone of Las Arenas, Puerto de la Cruz has a traditional Spanish feel and an abundance of Canarian hospitality.
The north of Tenerife enjoys a year-round sub-tropical climate, making Puerto de la Cruz a perennially popular destination. The city has many carefully cared-for gardens and enjoys a landscape of lush vegetation – rare for an island covered by desert and black volcanic sand.
Puerto de la Cruz used to be renowned for its trade in sugar and wine but is still the place to go if you want to enjoy the finer things in life. Tourists flock to dine in the sunshine, relax by the Atlantic Ocean or enjoy the local festivities. In July, La Sardinada (the Sardine Festival) brings traditional celebrations into the modern day, with fireworks, water fights, music, dancing and plenty of good food and drink. But, since this is Tenerife, you can expect good weather and good times whenever you visit.
Families travel from all over the world to enjoy the city’s good weather and safe beaches, so it’s easy to find family hotels in Puerto de la Cruz. There are various child-friendly attractions in the area, with the famous Loro Parque zoo just to the west of the centre of Puerto de la Cruz. Wherever you base yourself, you'll be within fairly easy distance of plenty of activities and the beach. At the five-star Hotel Botanico, your family could enjoy three heated swimming pools, a full-service spa, private botanical gardens and even in-room childcare.
If you’re on a tighter budget, Hotel Monopol offers basic rooms with sea or pool-view balconies and breakfast from just £40 per night. There are spa facilities for mums and dads to enjoy while cribs and cots are available for small guests at no extra cost. Blackout blinds and ceiling fans in each room also ensure a comfortable night’s sleep.
The Parque Vacacional Eden is situated between Jardin Botanico and Parque Taoro, the two largest parks in Puerto de la Cruz. With four pools, a poolside bar, a shuttle bus to the shopping centre and a games room, it’s perfect for families. Each room also has a small kitchen area so you can choose to eat at the in-house restaurant or prepare your own meals and snacks.
Tenerife may be a bustling tourist destination but there are plenty of cheap hotels in Puerto de la Cruz for travellers on a budget. There are two-star hotels in Puerto de la Cruz that offer clean, comfortable rooms at reasonable prices – and because Tenerife has no high-season, costs remain steady throughout the year.
Couples should check out the adult-only RF Apartamentos Bambi, which has an outdoor pool and roof terrace and rooms from as little as £30 per night. Wifi comes at an extra cost, so perhaps this could be the hotel for you if you’re looking to disconnect from the world and relax.
Three-star hotels in Puerto de la Cruz can be surprisingly luxurious, especially in the beach and park areas of the city. Apartmentos Teneguia has an outdoor pool, balcony rooms with sea views, an on-site gym and even a business centre for around £30 per night. For a similar price, Apartamentos Alta also ticks all the budget boxes while for around £40 per night, RF San Borondon offers more stylish accommodation.
Unlike most areas of mainland Spain and the Canaries, you can smoke at the outdoor tables of bars and cafes in Tenerife. Smoking in enclosed spaces is illegal, however, and you could find yourself with a hefty fine if you are caught smoking outside specifically-marked smoking areas.
Many hotels in Puerto de la Cruz have designated smoking areas for their guests and specific smoking rooms for guests. If you would like to ensure you can smoke in your hotel room, be sure to inform the hotel when you complete the Expedia booking process.
