With its white sand beaches, warm waters and wide variety of resorts, restaurants and leisure attractions, it’s no surprise that Tenerife is such an enduringly popular holiday destination. The largest and most populated of the Canary Islands, it’s a place that boasts tropical forests, striking natural landscapes and one of the largest volcanoes in the world, the impressive Mount Teide. Tenerife is also home to two international airports, so flights to and from the island are very straightforward.

Flying to International Airports on Tenerife (TFN) and (TFS)

Tenerife’s two international airports are known simply as Tenerife North (TFN) and Tenerife South (TFS). Tenerife North is located on the north of the island, just outside the city of San Cristobal de La Laguna, a short drive from the capital city, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Tenerife South, the larger of the two, is situated on the southern coast, in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona. More airlines and destinations are served by Tenerife South, as Tenerife North is dedicated largely to domestic flights within Spain .

Flight Options for Travelling to Tenerife

You have many options when it comes to flying into Tenerife. Depending on the time of year, most major airports in the UK and across Europe offer direct flights to the island. However, you can also use Expedia’s multi-flight booking function if you require connecting flights from a destination not served by Tenerife North or Tenerife South. If you’re looking to save money, rest assured that the island is served by several budget airlines that offer cheap tickets, including Ryanair and easyJet. Premium services and business class options will also be available, depending upon the airline you fly with.

After Your Flight: Travelling to and From Tenerife’s Airports

Both Tenerife North and Tenerife South are very well connected, making travel to and from your chosen airport quick and easy. You will find affordable car rental agencies at terminals in either location, too. You can also book an airport transfer to neighbouring cities, or (your cheapest option) use the clean and comfortable public buses.

If you are planning on hiring a vehicle and driving around the island, be aware that the main motorways loop around the centre of the island where Teide National Park is located. These motorways take you along the coast, passing by both airports and through the main cities and towns of San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz and Los Cristianos.

Things to Do on Tenerife

There is no shortage of things to do on Tenerife; however, most tourists make a tour of Teide National Park a priority. Other highlights include the Botanical Garden in Puerto de la Cruz and La Naturaleza y El Hombre Museum in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. You’ll also find numerous opportunities for sunbathing, swimming, water sports, and hiking. Vibrant bars, nightclubs and restaurants provide the evening entertainment. Finally, don’t forget to try the local food. The Canary Islands are known for unique delicacies such as papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes) and salted fish, which are influenced by Spanish, Latin American and African cuisine.
