Pocket Guide: Chessington

Chessington World of Adventures is one of Britain’s most popular amusement parks, and it does not disappoint. Situated conveniently just 12 miles from central London, it’s certainly one of the easiest amusement parks to get to. Being so close to a major transport hub means it pulls in punters from all over the country. Well, that and it’s incredible roster of some of the best, most hair-raising rides in the world – which you can enjoy with either a hotel in Chessington World of Adventures itself or in the surrounding area..

From a Humble Zoo to a World of Adventures

What would become Chessington World of Adventures originally opened as Chessington Zoo in 1931. In 1987, the Tussauds Group (the geniuses behind the waxworks at Madame Tussauds) decided to develop a new amusement park alongside the zoo. Because the zoo had animals hailing from lands all over the world, Tussauds decided to incorporate this idea into their park. Dividing the park up into different themed areas based around the mystic exotic lands of the animals, Chessington World of Adventures became Britain’s first themed amusement park.

Chessington World of Adventure is comprised of 10 different themed areas, each with rides, shops and eateries that fit the theme. Today you’ll find such mystical lands as the Forbidden Kingdom, Mystic East, Mexicana, Pirates Cove, Transylvania and Wild Asia. There’s also a dedicated areas for the younger adventurers in the Land of Dragons. Ride the Chessington’s most famous attractions, such as the Vampire horror-coaster, the fantastical Bubbleworks and the vertigo inspiring Rameses Revenge. With over 40 rides to keep your heart pumping, you won’t have a dull moment with a Chessington hotel.

Chessington: A World of Animals

While park might have grown into one of the biggest theme park resorts in the world, that doesn’t mean it’s forgotten its roots. Chessington Zoo still remains as part and parcel of the park. You can still see over 1000 animals from all over the world. There’s even a SEA LIFE centre where you can see sharks, stingrays and so much more.

Whether you want to stay at one of the resort hotels in Chessington World of Adventures itself or one of the cheaper, surrounding Chessington hotels, you can find your perfect accommodation right here. Remember, there are plenty of London hotels within striking distance of this awesome theme park, which also give you the opportunity to explore the country’s legendary capital.
