Dramatic cliffs, turquoise seas, secluded pine-shaded bays, white-sand beaches, deserted coves and jagged mountain peaks – is it any wonder Mallorca is one of Europe’s most enduring holiday hotspots? The largest island in the Balearic archipelago, this sun-drenched destination has long been a favourite with beach lovers, while a number of literary greats have found inspiration in its awe-inspiring natural beauty.

Well-known authors who wrote about Mallorca include Jorge Luis Borges, George Sand (along with her then-lover, Chopin), Agatha Christie and Nobel Prize winner Camilo José Cela. It’s easy to see what sparked their creativity too – Serra de Tramuntana, the mountain range that forms the northern backbone of the island, has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its great natural and cultural significance.

Where to Stay in Mallorca

Hotels in Palma, the island’s capital, make good bases for touring around. From Palma, an antique wooden train cuts through a string of tunnels in the Tramuntana Mountains to arrive at Sóller, a picturesque town with art nouveau houses set in a mountainous landscape. Exploring this area could easily take a week. Another option is to choose a hotel in Valldemossa, where George Sand and Chopin spent a winter, or Deià, much loved by artists from all over the world.

Thanks to its world-wide status as a favourite travel destination, there's no shortage of excellent hotels in Mallorca. The four-star Boutique Hotel Posada Terra Santa, for example, is situated in a historic area of Palma, a short distance from its iconic cathedral and the train station. Its amenities include a full-service spa, indoor and outdoor pools, and a rooftop terrace, so sweeping views and rejuvenating leisure activities are on your doorstep.

If you want to hide away, why not look at hotels in the Mallorcan countryside? Many of these are traditional Mallorcan properties that have been converted into boutique hotels or more rustic fincas (countryside estates). Some rates include breakfast.

What to Do in Mallorca

In Palma, the dramatic Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma, also referred to as La Seu, dominates the skyline and overlooks the Bay of Palma. This architectural tour de force, designed in Catalan Gothic style, has golden sandstone walls that appear to rise out of the sea like a vast ship. Inside, there is an altar canopy by Antoni Gaudí. Opposite the cathedral stands the Palacio Real de La Almudaina, a Moorish royal palace.

The Catalan painter, sculptor and ceramicist Joan Miró lived much of his life in Palma. To see his works, pop into Miró’s studio, which has been preserved just as he left it, with paint everywhere and unfinished canvasses.

The Serra de Tramuntana has a gorgeous landscape, as you would expect from a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a road trip up and round the hairpin bends from Valldemossa to the idyllic village of Deià, 10 miles (16km) north, perched on a hill and full of pretty ochre-coloured brick houses. Deià is known for its many literary and musical residents, including English poet Robert Graves. Once you've passed through the Fornalutx valley, you'll arrive at Sa Calobra, where you’ll find a beautiful cove, a hidden beach and an incredible gorge.

Does Mallorca Have Family-Friendly Hotels?

This is a much-loved family destination, so naturally you’ll find a wide variety of family-friendly hotels in Mallorca. As well as the option to add extra beds and cribs to your room, your hotel may offer services such as a kids’ club.

You might be able to save money on your family holiday by looking for apart-hotels in Mallorca; local markets sell fresh produce at fantastic prices, so whipping up yummy snacks and healthy dinners is a cinch.

For a luxury self-catering alternative, villas in Mallorca are the top choice. You’ll benefit from added privacy and having an outdoor pool and furnished terrace just for your family’s use. Soundproof rooms are ideal for light sleepers of all ages, while on-site fitness centres help you work off the delicious Balearic cuisine without having to stray far from your kids – the Palma Suites Hotel Residence offers both, as well as a rooftop pool with panoramas of the glistening Mediterranean.

How Easy is Getting Around Mallorca?

Although the island is served by trains and popular areas are covered by the public bus network, you could consider hiring a car in Mallorca to explore its remote beaches and mountains at your own pace. Town centres, including that in Palma, are all quite walkable.

Don’t stop at Mallorca – make time to discover the wealth of natural beauty, historic attractions and lively nightlife offered by the other islands in the Balearic archipelago. Party people can look at our hotels in Ibiza for some inspiration. Or if you’re after a more laid-back break, our hotels in Menorca are ideal.
