Newcastle City Library (formerly known as Newcastle Centre Library) is located in the heart of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The current building was opened in June 2009, replacing the previous library which was demolished in 2007. The Library is an important resource for the local community and is well worth stopping by if you're residing in any nearby Newcastle hotels or guesthouses.
More Than Just a Library
Boasting a café, gallery space, meeting rooms, computer centre, performance hall and much more, Newcastle City Library is more than just a place to come and borrow books; it is one of the city's most important cultural hubs. The current library was opened as recently as 2009, however, there has been a library in the area since Victorian times. The previous library, which was known as Central Library until the late 1990s, didn't have the most positive of architectural reputations and was known in some quarters as "a monstrous concrete blob"! Thankfully, the new library is much less controversial and benefits from lots of modern features, including digitally tagged books, self-checkout machines and free-to-use computers with internet access.
