Pocket Guide: Newcastle-upon-Tyne Newcastle-upon-Tyne Central Library Hotels

Newcastle City Library (formerly known as Newcastle Centre Library) is located in the heart of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The current building was opened in June 2009, replacing the previous library which was demolished in 2007. The Library is an important resource for the local community and is well worth stopping by if you're residing in any nearby Newcastle hotels or guesthouses.

More Than Just a Library

Boasting a café, gallery space, meeting rooms, computer centre, performance hall and much more, Newcastle City Library is more than just a place to come and borrow books; it is one of the city's most important cultural hubs. The current library was opened as recently as 2009, however, there has been a library in the area since Victorian times. The previous library, which was known as Central Library until the late 1990s, didn't have the most positive of architectural reputations and was known in some quarters as "a monstrous concrete blob"! Thankfully, the new library is much less controversial and benefits from lots of modern features, including digitally tagged books, self-checkout machines and free-to-use computers with internet access.

The library boasts an extensive collection of rare books and periodicals, many of which relate to the local area. There are regular exhibitions and special events, so it's worth checking what's on before stopping by. The library also offers a local studies and family history service, so it’s the place to go if you're interested in tracing your family tree. You don't have to be a local to enjoy the library, and the 100-seat library café is a great spot for a refreshment as you explore Newcastle's vibrant city centre.

Newcastle City Library's location at the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne puts it in easy reach of some top Tyne and Wear hotels - something for all tastes and budgets, whether you're looking for an apartment hotel or affordable family-friendly accommodation. These top hotels include the four-star Sandman Signature Hotel, the three-star Surtees Hotel, the 3.5-star Roomzzz Newcastle and Centralofts Week2Week apartment hotel, which also has 3.5-stars.
