Central Arcade

Shop inside this strip of high-end boutiques flanked by rows of stylish street lamps and plants.

Rebuilt in Edwardian style at the beginning of the 20th century after a fire, the Central Arcade is one of Newcastle’s most prominent shopping strips. The stretch of boutiques itself is located within a 19th-century structure with three domes. It was previously used as a newsroom and an art gallery. As you peruse this upscale shopping arcade, admire the intriguing patterns on the mosaic tiles that decorate the floor.

Arrive at the site from Grainger Street, Grey Street or Market Street in the commercial area of the city. Note the elegant façade with a glass dome and large arched portal. Enter through one of the three street doors and gaze up at the intricate arched barrel-vaulted glass ceiling. The transparent roof gives the shopping area a light and airy feel, as if it were outside.

Snap photos of the elaborate Edwardian décor set around stately arches and pillars. The arcade is particularly majestic at sunset, when the outdoor light creates a warm ambiance. Get a sense of the local culture as you relax at a café in the structure and watch people go by.

Peruse the shops to purchase varied items such as natural soaps, clothing and accessories. The stores occasionally change, although a local favourite is JG Windows, which has been selling musical instruments and equipment for more than 100 years. Check in at the Newcastle Tourist Information Centre to get the latest details about the city and its attractions.

Learn about the history of the mall, which was built in 1906 by a local architectural firm. It is in the Central Exchange, a large building originally intended to be the city’s Corn Exchange. Fire destroyed the site in 1867 and 1901, before it was rebuilt again.

Enter the historic arcade for free. The shops open daily from morning until late afternoon.

Take a bus to one of the many stops around the Central Arcade in this central area of Newcastle. Walk northwest for 15 minutes from the Gateshead Millennium Bridge to get here. Nearby attractions include the Theatre Royal, Grey’s Monument and St. John the Baptist Church.
