    Pocket Guide: United Kingdom

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is one of the major tourist destinations in Europe. It boasts a complex and fascinating history, unique national character and an incredibly varied landscape. Its main city, London, is a global metropolis and one of the most multicultural places on the planet with some absolutely stunning hotels. England is a contrast of industrial heritage, rolling green countryside and traditional villages. To the north, Scotland is rugged and incredibly beautiful, and Wales enigmatic and mysterious. Across the Irish Sea is Northern Ireland, a verdant and historical nation, with a mystical heritage.

Areas & Neighbourhoods: Where to Stay in the United Kingdom

England - The largest of the countries that make up the union, its varied landscapes include the Lake District, the charming West Country and welcoming North East. Whether you’re looking for a country retreat or a hotel in the city, you’ll find it in England.

Scotland - Cities include Glasgow and Edinburgh, with the Highlands a sparsely populated but magnificent landscape covered in vast lochs and rugged peaks. Book at hotel in Inverness and go monster hunting at Loch Ness.

Wales - Traditional mining valleys, the dramatic Pembrokeshire Coast and wildlife haven of the Gower Peninsula are just three of Wales’ many attractions. Book yourself a hotel in The Valleys.

Northern Ireland - Charismatic Belfast is the capital but it’s the stunning landscapes and scenery that are the real star, including its Atlantic-battered northern coastline. You’ll never have a dull moment with a hotel in Northern Ireland.

Things to See with a Hotel in the United Kingdom

London is by far the biggest city in the UK, cram-packed full of globally recognised attractions including Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament and the Tower of London. But the UK’s other major cities are well worth a visit too. Edinburgh, the ‘Athens of the North’ is a classically beautiful city full of architectural splendour. Glasgow is full of personality, Newcastle friendly and Liverpool renowned for being fun. For natural wonders, visit the Lake District, Peak District or Brecon Beacons. Explore some of the UK’s vast and diverse coastline, enjoy a naughty weekend in Brighton or hit the beaches in remote Cornwall.

Things to Do in the United Kingdom

Catch the tube or walk your way around London, visiting its major attractions. Take a day trip down to Brighton on the south coast for one of England’s most bohemian destinations. Head west to Bristol for engineering marvels or cross the bridge into Wales. Home of huge national parks with majestic scenery, including the Beacons and Pembrokeshire Coast, Wales has a lot to offer. Walk, cycle or ski in the Scottish Highlands or catch the boat out to the islands on the west coast. Hit the beaches on the English Riviera on the south west coast, or head deep into Devon and Cornwall for cream tea. Watch world class sport across the country, with Premier League football, Wimbledon and the Open Golf Championship just some of the biggest events. Learn about history at the many National Trust properties. Or explore the UK’s cultural side at world leading museums and art galleries, including the Tate Modern and National History Museum.

"Great location, but crappy parking situation"
The location is very close to the Royal Mile, so you can walk to many things. IF you are taking a car, be prepared to walk a bit to and from it. The parking is down the hill from the hotel at Waverly Station, and the walk back up can be taxing. Also, the entrance to the car park is a bit harrowing. The bed was too hard for me, and the pillow choices weren't much better. The reception staff were alright, but the restaurant and bar staff were loads of fun (except for one).

"Okay if you need a quick stop."
My friend & I were breaking up a long drive north with a stop around Edinburgh with our stop here. The rooms were very comfortable and it was a great place to rest for the night. The hotel restaurant was really good and the prices weren't crazy. My only complaints are a couple issues with some of the staff, most of whom seemed pretty unfriendly. The first issue was check-in where the lady working the desk was a bit gruff. I'd booked the two twin bed room with the option that came with free parking as we'd have the car. We asked about parking as there was a ticket gate and she said it would be £4. I said I booked our room with free parking but she claimed they didn't offer that on Expedia. I used the mobile app to pull up my booking and showed her where the included amenity on my booking stated free parking. She begrudgingly agreed to give in to the free parking and seemed pretty surly about it. Our second issue was on check-out with the room charges when I questioned the total as being more than we spent. The problem was a bill from stopping in the hotel bar to get hot chocolate to take up to the room. We didn't notice when we signed the bill the evening prior that a £50 tip had been included on the bill for our two hot chocolates (that were £5 total). I pointed out the exorbitant tip on the bill and the staff on the desk said it was probably an accident from when the bill was keyed in and quickly took the charge off the bill.
