Maui Island: Budgets Stays in Wailuku
All of Maui Island’s one-star hotels are in the small town of Wailuku, right on the edge of the expansive West Maui Forest Reserve and the Iao Valley and just a 15-minute drive from Kahului Airport.
Once used as a base for missionaries in the 19th century, Wailuku has a vibrant culture, especially along popular Market Street. Lined with typically Hawaiian wooden facades, many of the restaurants and shops along the street have been passed down from generation to generation and are regularly frequented by locals.
Staying in a 1 Star Hotel in Wailuku
Maui Island’s one-star hotels are functional and comfortable, offering you everything you need for a pleasant stay on the island. You can use free WiFi to organise sightseeing itineraries and staff on front desks can help with tour tickets. Some hotels feature onsite restaurants and convenience stores.
You can expect to share bathrooms, but you’ll have plenty of modern comforts in your room, such as flat-screen TVs and DVD players. Some hotels also offer pillow top beds and complimentary toiletries.
Stay near the West Maui Forest Reserve
A popular destination for hikers, the West Maui Forest Reserve has a number of well-known walking routes, including the Ioa Needle Trail. The route takes you along the Ioa Valley, right at the edge of the reserve. Only a few minutes’ drive from Wailuku, the Ioa Valley is traditionally where Hawaiians would gather to honour their god of agriculture. At the pinnacle of the trail, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views across the West Maui Forest Reserve and Wailuku.
Visiting Lahaina
Just a 35-minute drive from Wailuku, the historic village of Lahaina is one of Maui’s oldest towns, and its old buildings and architecture still give it the feel of a 19th-century whaling village. The busy village has many art galleries, souvenir shops and eateries, and its beach is a hotspot for the island’s surfers. The village is one of Maui Island’s best locations for whale watching, especially from January to March, when the animals can be spotted from the shore.
