Often ranked as the best golf course in the whole of Hawaii, the Kapalua Golf Club Plantation Course stretches out across deep gorges and landscaped greens. Many golfing greats – think Tiger Woods and Ernie Els – have played on the course. And professional golfers are regularly seen out on the course during the annual PGA Tour Hyundai Tournament of Champions.
The small town of Kapalua is a hotbed of deluxe hotels and resorts. With luxury accommodation comes boutique shopping and award-winning restaurants, some of which line the town’s three sandy beaches.
Just a 20-minute drive south of the Kapalua Golf Club Plantation Course, the eclectic town of Lahaina and its excellent choice of mid-range hotels and resorts. This former whaling port is now a tourist hotspot with restaurants, shops and art galleries and is the second most-visited place in Maui.
Hotels and resorts near the Plantation Course are traditionally designed with Hawaiian-inspired decors but have free WiFi, flat-screen TVs and coffeemakers. Many rooms also come with refrigerators and microwaves. In high-end accommodation, you can enjoy deep-soaking tubs and furnished lanai looking over gardens or the Pacific Ocean. For shared facilities, you can expect outdoor pools and gardens with barbecue grills in most of the hotels, with many of the high-end hotels offering tennis courts and spa facilities, too.
There’s a great choice of activities along the western coast of Maui Island, especially on the multiple beaches popular with surfers and body boarders. The calm conditions at beaches in West Maui are well-suited for beginner surfers, and there are many surf schools in this area.
One of the biggest attractions in West Maui is the Whalers Village in Kaanapali. At this large shopping complex, there more than just shopping -- enjoy contemporary restaurants, regular hula shows and even ukulele lessons. You can also pay a visit to the whaling museum that showcases the area’s maritime history before you return to the Plantation Course for a round of afternoon golf.
