Pocket Guide: Lahaina Honolua Bay Hotels

Exploring Maui Island: Honolua Bay

Experienced surfers flock to Honolua Bay on the north-west coast during the winter surf season, when Honolua Bay’s powerful waves are at their peak. Join locals and visitors alike on the cliffs surrounding Honolua Bay to watch the skilled surfers and to take in the stunning views across the ocean to Molokai Island.

If surfing appeals to you, visit during the summer when you can get lessons in the much calmer waters. Summer also sees Honolua Bay turn into a popular spot for snorkelling and scuba diving, when you can see some beautiful marine life in the bay, which is part of the Mokuleia Marine Life Conversation District.

Beyond Honolua Bay: Honolua Valley

Honolua Bay is surrounded by the lush Honolua Valley. Walking trails cut under the thick canopy, so strike out for a wander along the paths lined with nut trees and various vines. The chickens who usually peck around at the side of the trail add to the spirit of an entertaining adventure.

Staying on Maui Island: Lahaina

Just a 20-minute drive south of Honolua Bay, Lahaina is one of West Maui’s most popular resort areas. This former whaling village still retains most of its 19th-century buildings and storefronts, so when you visit, you’ll find a buzzy bar and restaurant scene as well as plenty of sandy beaches perfect for water sports.

Just four miles from Honolua Bay, you’ll also find the white-sand beaches in the premium resort area of Kapalua. The waters are perfect for both bathers and surfers, and when the beach gets too much, you can make the most of two of Maui Island’s best golf courses.

Maui Island Resorts: Facilities and Amenities

The majority of accommodation in Lahaina and Kapalua ranges from comfortable three-star condos to lavish five-star resorts. Almost every hotel and resort is right by the beach with fantastic ocean views that you can enjoy from private furnished lanais.

Onsite entertainment in these areas range from outdoor pools and spa tubs to ocean-view restaurants and traditional Hawaiian entertainment. Upgrade to a high-end resort for golf courses and free resort shuttle buses.
