Pocket Guide: Hana

Maui Island Areas: Hana

In East Maui, the small community of Hana is in a scenic spot right between the ocean and the lush rainforest. Hana has a small-town feel to it, with none of the usual luxury frills – like golf courses and shopping complexes – often found across Maui Island. Instead, Hana is an escape. You will find a secluded island paradise with quiet beaches and unbeatable scenery.

The Road to Hana

Hana is possibly best known for its highway that stretches up the coast to Kahului. Many travellers fly into Kahului Airport and hire a car to drive down to Hana. Known as one of the most beautiful drives in the world, it follows some of Maui Island’s most rugged coastline. You’ll find plenty of spots to stop off at and explore some of the surrounding landscape. Various hiking trails start at points along the road, and there are also many popular attractions, including Waianapanapa State Park and Wailua Falls to enjoy en route.

Hotels in Hana

Hana’s hotels are mainly two- and three-star, but you can also find a couple of premium four-star resorts. Hotels have plenty of outdoor facilities, from swimming pools to landscaped gardens and picnic areas. Some hotels also offer barbecue grills, spa facilities and traditional Hawaiian luau parties.

In your room, premium bedding and ceiling fans help you get a good night’s sleep. Then you can relax on furnished lanais and watch the sun rise over a drink from your coffeemaker. Some condos also provide kitchen facilities complete with stovetops and refrigerators.

Hana Bay Beach Park

Hana’s central beach is known for its fine black sand and protected coral reef. One of the safest beaches in East Maui, Hana Bay Beach Park is popular among local families who regularly enjoy picnics on its grassy area. The calm ocean is perfect for canoeing.

Culture in Hana

One of Hana’s most significant cultural sites, Wananalua Congregational Church is listed on America’s National Register of Historic Places. Dating back to the mid-19th century, the church is closely associated with the very first western settlers who arrived in Hawaii.
