Pocket Guide: Kahului

Staying in Kahului on Maui Island

Just an eight-minute drive from Kahului Airport, the small town of Kahului is where you’ll find Maui Island’s main harbour. Still very much a working town which many visitors treat as a transit stop, Kahului has a number of full-service hotels and resorts. These, along with its excellent transport links and central location, are slowly turning it into one of the island’s up-and-coming resort areas.

Hotels in Kahului

You’ll find a good choice of mid-range hotels in Kahului offering convenient accommodation close to both the town and surrounding tropical landscape. Each hotel has plenty of outdoor space and gardens to retreat to for some shade with stunning coastal views.

What to Expect from Kahului’s Hotels

Air-conditioned rooms come with satellite TV and free WiFi. Compact refrigerators and coffee makers mean you can make your own breakfast or a snack. A number of hotels also offer premium bedding and iPod docks.

While you can make use of Kahului hotels’ free parking, you might prefer to simply use the free airport shuttle and easy access to public transport.

Shopping in Kahului

Held in central Kahului, the weekly Maui Swap Meet is one of the island’s liveliest shopping events. There are around 200 stalls selling antiques and locally made crafts and jewellery. For more shopping, take the five-minute drive to Wailuku’s Market Street. This street is one of the main attractions of Wailuku’s historic area and is lined with record stores, art galleries and coffee shops.

Maui Culture in Kahului

To soak up some of the island’s culture, head to the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. This large entertainment venue regularly hosts cultural festivals as well as many theatre, comedy and dance performances.

Driving the Road to Hana

Beginning 14 miles from Kahului, the Road to Hana stretches just over sixty-four miles down Maui Island’s eastern coast. A popular route for day trips, the road passes by some of Maui’s best scenery. There are plenty of spots worth stopping off at and exploring, including the picturesque Twin Falls waterfalls and Hamoa Beach.
