Pocket Guide: Kihei

Maui Island: Kihei

On Maui Island’s southern coast, Kihei is one of the best places to bag a bargain holiday on Maui Island. Kihei is a lively beach town packed with budget condos and mid-range hotels. You will also find a range of restaurants and bars whatever your budget. As well as offering great value for money, Kihei also has some of Maui Island’s best weather.

Hotels in Kihei

You can find plenty of outdoor activities at Kihei’s hotels, including tennis, swimming and barbecues. All hotels and resorts are right next to the beach, and many offer beach-side picnic areas to settle into after a spot of snorkelling and splashing around.

Most of Kihei’s hotel rooms go with an island- or Hawaiian-style decor and come kitted out with plenty of modern comforts. Free WiFi and flatscreen TVs provide in-room entertainment, and you can relax in the sun on furnished lanais. Some rooms also have refrigerators and coffeemakers.

Things to Do in Kihei

Sunbathers regularly head to Kihei’s long beach, while swimmers and snorkellers flock to its crystal-clear waters. Just north of Kihei, Maalaea Bay is a renowned spot for whale watching, but you can also join pleasure-boat trips out into the ocean for fishing and snorkelling.

Kihei has a varied nightlife that ranges from karaoke bars to dance clubs. The Maui Brewing Co.’s tasting room serves locally brewed beers. For a sophisticated night out, head to the Ambrosia Martini Lounge with its live DJs and plenty of drinks deals.

Exploring Maui Island

Located in Maalaea Bay, the Maui Ocean Center gives you the chance to explore the island’s native marine life. The aquarium’s exhibits include shark tanks and the world’s largest collection of living corals from the Pacific Ocean.

Just a 15-minute drive down the coast from Kihei, Maluaka Beach is right next to the popular Makena Golf Course. Nicknamed Turtle Beach, swimmers and snorkellers regularly spot the many sea turtles that live just off the coast. A picnic area provides plenty of shade, and the beach has plenty of other facilities, including parking, toilets and showers.
