Right in the heart of Kaanapali, Whalers Village is a large beachside shopping complex. As well as a range of boutique and high-street fashion, Whalers Village also hosts regular hula shows and many other traditional Polynesian dance events. And kids can take part in a ukulele or lei-making class.
Whalers Village also houses a small museum that details Lahaina’s whaling heritage and history. At the museum, you can catch a free talk about whales, especially the native humpback.
If you want more shopping after Whalers Village, head for Lahaina’s Front Street, one of the village’s most popular areas, with fashion boutiques, jewellery shops and art galleries. Nearby, Maui Island’s only enclosed shopping centre, the Lahaina Cannery Mall, has a boutiques and speciality shops to mooch around.
For a shopping day out, make your way to the Queen Kaahumanu Center, Maui Island’s largest shopping mall, in Kahului. There, take your pick of international shopping chains or catch some live music or a movie.
The majority of accommodation near Whalers Village is four-star hotels and resorts. Set by the beach or in Lahaina’s lush rainforest, the hotel rooms and condos have fantastic views from furnished lanais and balconies. And there’s plenty of modern comforts in the room, including pillow-top beds, LCD TVs and free WiFi.
Depending on the hotel you choose, you’ll have beachside restaurants and luau parties, tennis courts and outdoor pools.
Kaanapali has three beaches which are each ideal for water sports and enjoying the Hawaiian weather. The area has two award-winning golf courses, one of which, the Plantation Course, hosts the annual PGA Tour Hyundai Tournament of Tours. So you can easily get around, hop on the regular shuttles between Kaanapali and Whalers Village.
D.T. Fleming Beach Park is one of Lahaina’s best beaches, a sandy cove with ideal conditions for swimming and water sports next to beachside bars and picnic areas. Head to D.T. Fleming Beach Park to catch a pretty impressive sunset, or make your way to Kaanapali Beach to see the nightly diving ceremony which takes place at Black Rock.
