With its world-famous ballet, its Museum of Fine Arts and the nearby Harvard University, Boston is one of America's oldest cultural treasures, located in the state of Massachusetts. Just outside the city is Lexington Battle Green, dubbed the birthplace of American liberty for its role in the American Civil War. The unique character of Boston and its surrounding areas is formed by the many buildings and sites that have survived from the time of the war.
Some of these Civil War-era buildings now house hotels, where you can stay to get a sense of this pivotal period in American history. But there are many modern options available too. The wide range of hotels in Boston means you can discover this historic city no matter your budget or taste.
The lively centre of Boston offers a great variety of three- to five-star hotels. In the middle of the Financial District you’ll find a whole host of luxurious hotels with spacious guest rooms overlooking the city. Or if you’d prefer a little culture, you’ll find plenty of hotels near the Downtown Crossing and the Theatre District, where the cultural and architectural history of the city is clearly visible.
Back Bay is an exclusive area of the city frequented by American sports and movie stars, and it's dominated by unique fashion boutiques and stylish restaurants. You’ll also find some of the trendiest boutique hotels in Boston around this area, offering pools, elegant restaurants and free Wifi. Spend a night in a spacious room at the Hilton Boston Back Bay and wake the next morning to walk among the celebrity elite in the Prudential Centre. Right down the street is the historic Trinity Church.
The handful of hotels in Beacon Hill in Boston offer a homely atmosphere and are well integrated into the old colonial streets, dominated by red-brick houses and charming antique shops. As it’s so close, it’s well worth taking a peek at the grand parliament building, the Massachusetts State House.
For a romantic getaway, look for hotels near the South Boston Waterfront, where much of the accommodation offers beautiful views. This is also the home of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Centre, as well as the Children's Museum. The impressive Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) is a stone's throw away, and there’s a pleasant beach walk to Castle Island, with its historic fortress dating to the time of the Revolutionary War.
The area of Fenway Kenmore is the perfect choice if you’re looking for a quiet business hotel in Boston or a self-catering apartment. Although this neighbourhood is just outside the centre, there’s still lots to keep you occupied here if you have time out between meetings. The Fenway Park district, for example, is home to the iconic Boston Red Sox baseball team. The stadium is within walking distance of many hotels, as are the brilliant works of art located at both the Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
If you’re looking for hotels near the Boston Convention and Exhibition Centre, however, consider staying in the South Boston area. From here, the exhibition centre and Downtown Boston will both be within walking distance.
Boston is an easy city to explore on foot or by public transport. The key areas are all walkable, taxis are widely available, and driving in the city centre can actually be more complicated than relying on the MBTA transport system. Incorporating the subway, public buses, the commuter rail and boats and ferries, the system provides great coverage of the city and beyond. The subway extends to neighbouring Cambridge. You can choose to buy individual tickets or pick up a daily or weekly Link Card for unlimited travel.
Remember, before you depart from Logan International Airport, a trip to the districts of Dorchester and West End are a must. The nearby university city of Cambridge, where the prestigious Harvard is located, is well worth a visit too.
