Excellent greeting at reception, lovely lady escorted us to our room in person, nu 17 when she informed us we had been upgraded, this was a lovely surprise as I had just booked a basic room so was not expecting much. The room was lovely , fab four poster bed and lovely clean modern bathroom.
The hotel itself oozed country character, we did not eat in the hotel but did have a drink in the bar on the evening which was lovely too.
All in all a great stay, I am sure we will be back at some point.

My partner and I have just spent a lovely weekend at the Macdonald Old England Hotel. We arrived to a valet parking service which was a really nice touch. The hotel was well maintained and very clean. The room was huge and very comfortable.
My only criticism was the service. Every time we ordered something, whether that was a drink at the bar or breakfast in the restaurant it seemed to take ages and was often wrong when they turned up. Make no mistake, the staff were polite and friendly and always keen to help, I could not fault them on this. It just took them ages to deliver on orders and left all parties involved scratching their heads and looking confused.
My advice for anyone planning a trip here, definitely go, its lovely. Just give yourself an extra half an hour for breakfast and plan drinks orders well in advance.
Lovely hotel inside with several log burning fires creating a pleasant environment. Staff were very friendly and helpful - happy to do table service in the bar and always attentive. Spa is very new and clean with a well furnished gym. One of the best breakfasts I have had in a hotel. Will look to go again.

Hotel was a real find, beautiful room.
Staff were very very helpful and friendly.
Evening menu was of a high standard, would definitely eat there again, very good.
Breakfast could not be faulted.
Very much looking forward to staying there again.
The hotel is about to have a major refurbishment which is long overdue..
The public rooms are large and spacious but very dated the hotel boasts great views across lake Windermere and it has a couple of lovely fireplaces with real fires.
The staff were very pleasant and accommodating..
We had our dog with us and he was made very welcome.
There was NOTHNG provided for him but it wasn't a problem but it would've been nice to have a dog bed and dog towel in the room..
The hotel is in a great location it has leisure but we didn't use it.
I hope when the hotel refurbishment is completed that they do retain some of the character.. But it really is tired and could do with some TLC..
But a pleasant stay

This was our 3rd stay here in one month!
Sadly this time things were not quite as polished as they had been before.
The soap in our room had to be replaced - Although new it was grubby. The kettle in our room was black/grey inside and had to be exchanged. My wife's main course at dinner was cool and had to be changed - The cost was kindly removed from our bill. All the above issues were courteously and efficiently resolved.
None of the above seriously spoiled our stay and we will be happy to return when the opportunity presents itself.
