Pocket Guide: Windermere

Situated just a short walk from the eponymous Lake Windermere, Windermere is a favourite stop for visitors to the UK’s beautiful Lake District. Packed full of delightful family-run guesthouses and bed & breakfasts, and with plenty of eateries, gastro-pubs and restaurants to keep its countless annual guests watered and fed, it’s no wonder why this small town is so popular.<.p>

Lake Windermere Hotels

The undeniable highlight of Windermere town is the nearby lake. Lake Windermere isn’t only the king of the Lake District’s lakes, it’s the largest body of water in the whole of England. Stretching for 10.5 miles between Ambleside and Newby Bridge, is lake plays host to all kinds of fun, frolics and water sports. It’s a favourite amongst sailors and boaters who want to work on their sailing skills, and is never short of windsurfers. It’s been a popular tourist spot for centuries, pulling in the crowds since the first steam trains chugged into the town’s station all the way back in 1847. Why not book yourself a hotel in Windermere overlooking the lake and really make the most of that incredible view.

Avoiding the Crowds

Windermere hotels can be a little tough to find during the high period, and the roads in and around the town can be pretty busy. Of course, the Lake District is best enjoyed during the warmer months, so it’s no surprise. By no means do you need to avoid peak times, just make sure you book well in advance to avoid disappointment. There are plenty of guesthouses, B&Bs and larger hotels in and around Windermere, so there’s plenty to choose from. Use the Expedia search tool to find your perfect hotel in Windermere.

Exploring the Lake District

The Lake District National Park is a big place, so thankfully even during peak times it’s never really truly packed. There are walks and hiking trails galore, many offering incredible views over the area’s green and lush landscape. There are also plenty of lakes (other than Windermere) where you can enjoy everything from a casual swim to water-skiing – such as Coniston Water and Ullswater. Grab yourself an adventure sports hotel in Windermere, or close to one of the other lakes, and make the most of the incredible adrenaline-pumping opportunities on offer in the area.

Whether you’re here for a pleasant walk in the fresh air or looking to really get the blood pumping, you’ll find the perfect hotel in Windermere with Expedia.
