England boasts some of the world's most spectacular natural landscapes, from mysterious moors to impressive mountain vistas. Many of the most beautiful sights are to be found in the North West, in the county of Cumbria. Home to the famous Lake District and part of the Yorkshire Dales, Cumbria is a delight for lovers of the great outdoors. One fun day out is the walk up to Alcock Tarn. Located just a short distance from Grasmere, the tarn is close to some exquisite hotels.
This gorgeous mountain lake is a little climb away, but the views are absolutely worth the effort! The walk itself takes visitors on a picturesque circular route. Totalling around three hours, the route is an ideal way to spend a morning or afternoon during your stay in Cumbria. From the shop in Grasmere, the route is around six miles long, but is relatively steep in places. There are numerous resting spots along the way, though, and the terrain is suitable for bringing dogs along.
The view once you make it to Alcock Tarn is exceptional. While the lake itself may look large, it's actually no more than about two metres deep, and perfect for those who love wild swimming! There are a number of ideal picnic spots both at the top and along the way. There's a shop for supplies in nearby Grasmere.
Hotels in Cumbria are typically very used to keen walkers passing through, so visitors can chat to staff members about their plans. Despite its rural location, in the very heart of the Lake District, Alcock Tarn is close to plenty of fine hotels and bed and breakfasts.
Visitors on a budget can check into the reasonably priced Thorney How Hostel, located on the edge of Grasmere. Shared bathrooms and bunk beds help keep prices low, but that doesn't mean guests need to compromise on comfort. There's free WiFi, a library, and access to Alcock Tarn couldn't be easier.
The Best Western Grasmere Red Lion Hotel is a traditional inn-style hotel, with some 49 guest rooms. There's a bar, free WiFi and even an indoor swimming pool, in case you've got any energy left at the end of the day.
