Book a hotel in Barbados, a location that has something for everyone: beach resorts that range from the humble to the grandiose, a thriving nightlife scene, a UNESCO World Heritage capital city, a stunningly beautiful interior that is peppered with delightful gardens, crashing surf on the east coast, the friendly, welcoming Bajans themselves and their exquisite cuisine and fiery rum.
The island of Barbados is situated just northeast of Venezuela but, with its long association with the UK and love of cricket, it is often known as the Little Britain of the Caribbean. Its actual name, however, derives from Pedro Campos, an early Portuguese explorer, who felt that the fig trees long hanging aerial roots resembled beards, and called the island Los Barbados (or ‘the bearded ones’)
There’s a lot more than beach, rum and sun to Barbados: explore the caves, visit the beautiful gardens, enjoy no end of watersports, dance the night away, play a game of cricket and shop, shop, shop (duty-free bargains are everywhere). Oh, and, of course, there is also plenty of that beach, rum and sun!
Bridgetown – The UNESCO World Heritage capital of Bridgetown is well worth getting off the pink-tinged sands to visit. The port of call for many cruise ships is known for its duty-free shopping and its museums, galleries and other cultural and historical attractions. Catch a cricket match at Kensington Oval, enjoy a day at the races with the cream of Bajan society or opt for a tour of Mount Gay’s rum distillery. There’s plenty to see and do with a hotel in Bridgetown hotel.
Central Eastern Barbados – Including the parishes of Saint Andrew, Saint George, Saint John, Saint Joseph and Saint Thomas, the rugged Atlantic coast of the island offers challenging waves for surfers, quieter beaches and secluded hotels for those who want to get away from it all.
Western Barbados – The parishes of Saint James, Saint Peter and Saint Lucy offer the calm, Caribbean Sea to visitors and some fairly wild, nightlife spots too! There are plenty of opportunities to be pampered, enjoy fine dining and live a life of luxury in a top class spa hotel here, but there are also some delightful historical sites offering picturesque views that you can explore for free.
Southern Barbados – Head for St. Lawrence Gap if you are feeling truly party hearty. This lively area is full of bars, restaurants and hotels and knows how to let its hair down.
The main sights of interest here are those pink sand beaches and the colourful marine life that can be seen just under the waters that lap against them. However, it would be a crying shame not to make a trip into the interior of the island to admire the Botanical Garden. Sports lovers may want to try and take in a cricket match at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, or idly watch the locals enthusiastically play wherever they can. A tour of Mount Gay Rum Distillery in Bridgetown will show you how all that sugar slowly becomes delightful alcohol whilst at Harrison's Cave in St. Thomas you can see how all that water gradually becomes stalactites and stalagmites.
Watersports, including scuba diving, kitesurfing, windsurfing and surf boarding, are in plentiful supply. You can swim with sea turtles, visit the wildlife reserve of the interior or enjoy the views from a sunset cruise. Trips to Bridgetown’s duty free stores and designer boutiques are perfect for shopaholics. The party scene is never too far away and reaches a crescendo in the south of the island. Spas, massage and beauty treatments are all there for the taking but make sure you leave plenty of time to sample the Bajan cuisine: breaded flying fish in a spicy sauce, pepperpot stew or cutters (sandwiches made with salt bread). For a splash of authenticity you can enjoy a meal at a historic plantation house or head to Oistins, on the south coast, where every Friday night a fish fry is held where the food, music and dancing don’t stop till the very early hours of the morning.
