Pocket Guide: Alderley Edge

Travelling to Alderley Edge

Alderley Edge has certainly made a name for itself. This village in Cheshire has a population of just 5,000, but it includes among its residents many famous celebrities and rich business people.

But you don’t have to be star-spotting to look for a hotel in Alderley Alderley-Edge-Hotels. It’s a scenic village and the countryside around it allows you to stay close to Manchester Airport and close to the attractions of the city of Manchester itself.

Just 15 miles south of Manchester, six miles northwest of Macclesfield and a mere four miles from Manchester Airport, Alderley Edge sits pretty, tucked below a wooded sandstone ridge overlooking the Cheshire Plain.

Falling inside Cheshire's Golden Triangle, Alderley Edge offers a selection of stylish cafes, swanky restaurants and designer shops, and some incredibly affluent houses that have attracted numerous Premier League footballers, actors and multi-millionaires.

It is one of the most expensive places to live in the UK outside central London. Its tree-lined streets hide the Victorian villas and mansions of its residents, which are further protected behind their incredibly spacious gardens. Once home to the cotton barons of Manchester, this tiny village has played host to such big football names as include David and Victoria Beckham, Joleon Lescott, Dwight Yorke, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick, and Coronation Street stars such as Helen Flanagan, Denise Welch and Richard Fleeshman.

Choosing your hotel in Alderley Edge

There are just a handful of hotel options in Alderley Edge itself – with real estate prices this high this is not surprising – but there are many options in the countryside around the village and close to Manchester Airport.

You can, however, join the WAGs, glad rags and swag that Alderley Edge contains. What’s more you’ll be based near some truly stylish shops, restaurants and cafes. But do pack your finest clothes!

Unsurprisingly, there are no budget hotel options in Alderley Edge but there is a choice of 3 or 4 star hotels.

A wider range of hotels can be found if you travel out into the villages of the surrounding countryside. Here you’ll find family-friendly hotels set in stately mansions, conveniently placed modern hotels offering easy access to Manchester Airport, and spa hotels providing a welcome spot of pampering.

Things to do from your Alderley Edge hotel

Let’s be honest – you’ve probably come here hoping to spot a few celebrities and rub shoulders with the Premiership stars, haven’t you?

Well, you’re likely to strike gold here: the Alderley Bar & Grill is a popular haunt. Head out to the nearby village of Prestbury, which is also home to soccer superstars, having played host to Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez, Wes Brown and Trevor Brooking. And the WAGs can often be seen shopping in Hale, or at least dropping their pooches off at the dog beauty shop!

But, maybe, you’ve come looking for actual gold? Several ancient gold bars have been found at Alderley Edge, and a Roman coin hoard was discovered here recently, too. If there’s room in your suitcase, pack that metal detector.

The latter part of Alderley Edge’s name comes from the wide, red sandstone escarpment that shelters the village. This is owned by the National Trust and it’s an ideal place to relax, take a stroll or take in the sights. The woodlands here have been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest for their unique geology, and it’s riddled with old copper mine workings.

The views are stunning from the top of the Edge. The panoramic vistas take in Cheshire and the Peak District; you can gaze over the undulating land and woods towards the distant, brooding Derbyshire peaks.

A short drive away the pleasures of Manchester will be in easy reach. Here you’ll find an intoxicating blend of history, culture and sporting prowess, and some hard to beat shopping too! Museums, galleries, art centres, entertainment venues, Old Trafford, the Etihad Stadium are all perfectly combined with the hedonistic pleasures of eating well, drinking in style and dancing the night away.

Manchester is an energetic city. It’s the main engine of the Northern Powerhouse scheme that seeks to skyrocket the north of England’s economy. And, of course, once everyone has made their fortune they can move out to Alderley Edge.
