Manchester is a huge and sprawling city in the northwest of England, famous for the leading role it played during the Industrial Revolution. It was a major centre of textile production and much of the old industrial heritage can still be seen if you're based at a Manchester hotel or guesthouse in the area. This is also a modern city that is today perhaps most popular with visitors for its club and music scenes, and for some of the best shopping opportunities in the country. The old canals, mills and warehouses are still there, but they've been brushed down, reclaimed and have become an integral and attractive part of Manchester's modern cityscape. Salford, in Greater Manchester, has lots of excellent attractions for all ages and is worth a visit while you're in the area.
One of Salford's most famous sons was the painter LS Lowry, and you can see hundreds of his famous 'matchstick men' at the gallery named after him here. The Salford Museum is also worth dropping into, to see its replica of a Victorian Street, complete with cobbles, bow-front shop windows and gas lamps. The Salford Museum and Art Gallery makes a great place to spend the afternoon in and enjoy a coffee and the inspiring exhibits relating to Salford's history. Chapel Street starts in Salford and ends up in Manchester city centre and is historically the main connection between the two; it was one of the first streets in the country to be lit by gas, back in 1806. So there's plenty going on in Salford and if you're trying to decide where to go next from your Manchester hotel this town makes the perfect destination.
From the historic and stately pile of the Tudor Ordsall Hall to the waterways of the Worsley Village Heritage Trail, there's so much to see and do in Salford. It's a city and hinterland unto itself, with myriad attractions for all ages and a great, semi-rural atmosphere. Enjoy a day out in Salford from your hotel in Manchester for a change from the big city.
