In the Ionian Sea, just off the west coast of mainland Greece, is the beautiful sprawling island of Corfu. The influences of both Greece and the nearby Albania are certainly reflected in the island’s art and architecture, such as the magnificent palace, Achilleion. As is typical for most Greek holidays, Corfu also offers plenty of beautiful beaches and is an ideal spot for snorkelling and water sports.
The Byzantine influence on northern Corfu is apparent in the beautiful and historic architecture – just check out the Angelokastro, a large Byzantine castle. On the northwest side you'll find a lovely seaside town in an area that is still barely known to tourists. Agios Georgios, has a great selection cosy restaurants and several three and four star hotels.
The eastern side of Corfu is the most touristy part of the island. Here you will find all the major resorts and hotels with wonderful pools, poolside bars and loungers, and a few even have bars in the water. On the east coast of Corfu, you'll also find beautiful beaches, such as Kalamaki or Barbati Beach, and some resorts located directly on the sea. If you want to be totally pampered, choose a four or five star hotel on the east coast of Corfu.
South Corfu is less touristy, but definitely is worth visiting, especially if you want a relaxing break away from the crowds. Here you will find the picturesque fishing village, Kavos, an ideal spot for water sports and snorkelling. Explore the waters and come face to face with turtles and even dolphins. On top of a few major resorts, you’ll find a good numbers of small hotels with three or four star ratings.
The least touristy in terms of resorts (but certainly a delightful stay) is west Corfu. This part of the island offers a lot in the terms of nature, charming towns and quaint villages. The hotels here are mostly three star accommodations. Want a quiet, romantic getaway? Book a hotel in the west of this beautiful island, with breathtaking views of the water from close to the pretty but hidden Elekas or Kontogialos beach.
Why not also look at our selection of hotels on Crete and explore another of Greece's beautiful islands.
