Home to the Tudor Brownsea Castle, Brownsea Island is just a short ferry-trip from Poole, deep in the heart of beautiful Dorset. The island itself is now protected by the National Trust and has been restored to its former glory. However, that restoration has been tastefully undertaken, leaving vast portions of the island to grow naturally and it acts as a haven for the threatened Red Squirrel. Although there are no hotels on the island, Poole is just across the water and offers everything from boutique B&Bs to upmarket luxury hotels.
Brownsea Island is ideal for those who want to immerse themselves in natural beauty. While it has a strong appeal for wildlife-lovers, there's plenty for families to get involved with. The Natural Play area is a healthy alternative to gaming gadgets, offering kids the chance to get on with some old-school fun such as building dens or trying their luck at the pine-cone shy. If there are any budding trackers in your party, there are a number of trails to follow, such as the pirate trail - in which young trackers can find treasure and learn about the pirates and smugglers that used to haunt the area.
Poole is the nearest source of accommodation, offering hotels in a range of shapes and sizes. For couples who want to enjoy some quality downtime together, there are exclusive B&Bs such as the Merchant House B&B, and even upmarket hotels such as the Haven Hotel, which offers an affordable slice of the high-life. However, you'll also find some superb, mid-range hotels which are ideal for those with children. Family-friendly hotels, such as the Thistle Poole Hotel and the Holiday Inn Express Hotel Poole, offer comfortable rooms and all the little extras you could need to make your stay a pleasant one.
There are no shops on Brownsea Island, but Poole boasts an eclectic selection, from independent stores to high-end and designer outlets. The Dolphin Shopping Centre is a sizeable mall, with numerous shops and a range of restaurants to refuel tired shoppers.
Brownsea Island is a beautiful attraction to explore. Well-served by nearby accommodation, a visit will leave you relaxed and restored.
