Pocket Guide: Banff

Banff: a Must-Visit Mountain Town

Whether or not you choose to stay in a hotel in Banff itself, you’re bound to visit the town during your trip to the Banff National Park. This unique mountain town is a thriving arts and cultural centre. It has plenty of hotels, bars and restaurants and is a great place to stock up on outdoor gear or souvenirs. The town itself is surrounded by mountains and is a beautiful place to stroll around.

Overlooked by the peaks of Mount Rundle, Cascade Mountain and Mount Norquay, the town was designed with the mountains in mind. In fact, its main shopping street was positioned to have the best possible view of Cascade Mountains. Banff, which has an elevation of 4,537ft, started out as Siding 29 of the Canadian Pacific Railway, but the area’s tourist potential soon became clear when the hot springs were discovered in the late 1800s, prompting Banff’s development. Nowadays the town has many resorts, hotels and lodges to choose from. It’s easy to get to the mountains, either by hiring a car, or taking a shuttle bus to one of the ski resorts.

A Thriving Town Close to the Action

Banff National Park has outstanding outdoor sports – hiking, biking, scrambling, skiing and snowboarding are all on offer. So whether you fancy rafting or horseback riding or even bear spotting, there are tour and activity guides ready to take you on your mountain adventure. And where there’s outdoor sports, there are shops selling all the gear for your holiday adventure.

For a break from the great outdoors, you can enjoy a visit to one of the towns’ museums or art galleries. At night the town comes alive with many bars, restaurants, clubs and live music venues to choose from. Whether you prefer enjoying a drink by a crackling log fire or dancing the night away there’s something in Banff for you.

Choose a hotel in the town of Banff and enjoy your holiday in beautiful scenery, while surrounded by all the conveniences of a thriving town.
