Open from morning to night every day, it’s perfect for soaking away your aches and pains after a busy day skiing or hiking on the slopes of the Banff National Park. And if your visit takes place in the winter months then you’ll be able to relax in the hot spring water while snow falls all around you. It doesn’t get much more idyllic than that.

If you base yourself in a resort near the Upper Hot Springs then you’ll be able to walk there first thing in the morning and have the place virtually to yourself. Alternatively, stay in a hotel in the town of Banff, just a short drive or taxi ride away, where you’ll find accommodation for all budgets. The Upper Hot Springs spa is a historic site with modern facilities. Recharge your batteries with refreshments at the café and pick up a memento of your trip at the gift shop. There’s also an ATM, picnic sites and walking trails nearby. The springs are at 5,200ft, which makes them the highest in Canada. During your visit you’ll be able to see right across the valley to Mount Rundle in the distance – the views are truly breathtaking.

If you’re a history fan you won’t be disappointed with the Upper Hot Springs. Originally a sacred place of the First Nations people of Canada, it was discovered by Canadian Pacific Railway workers in 1883. Banff National Park was created a few years later, in 1885, and in 1932 a bathhouse was opened at the hot springs.
