Pocket Guide: Whipsnade ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Hotels

The landlocked county of Bedfordshire prides itself on its wealth of outstanding natural beauty. The low-lying land is peppered with quaint villages and lively towns. One of the county's most popular tourist attractions puts this gorgeous natural landscape to good use. The ZSL Whipsnade Zoo spans some 600 acres of rural Bedfordshire, attracting thousands of visitors to the county each year. With so many excellent hotels in the surrounding area, the zoo is a great focal point for your United Kingdom holiday.

The UK's Biggest Zoo

Home to almost 3,000 creatures and spread across 600 acres of land, the ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is the biggest in the country. The zoo was founded back in 1931 and is run by the prestigious charity, the Zoological Society London, which also runs the famous London Zoo in Regent's Park.

The site is so huge, visitors have a decision to make when it comes to getting around the site. Those in no hurry are free to walk, but most visitors opt either to drive themselves around or hop on the zoo's own train or bus. There's excellent catering facilities dotted around the zoo, meaning you won't go hungry, no matter where you are at lunchtime.

Diverse Environments

With so many animals in one attraction, it's understandable that the zoo plays home to a number of different environments.

The large Passage Through Asia part of the park allows animals to roam free, enjoying the natural habitat of the Bedfordshire countryside. Elsewhere, visitors can check out the Lions of the Serengeti (definitely not a walk-through area!), or the trained sea lions that live in the large pool.

Staying near The Zoo

Some of the finest hotels in Bedfordshire are within easy reach of the ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, which is close to Dunstable.

The Highwayman Hotel and Holiday Inn Express are located in Dunstable, both offering easy access to the A5, which connects guests with much of the county.

Those seeking a more lively setting for their hotel can head into the centre of nearby Luton, where there are plenty of branded and independent hotels and guesthouses to choose from to suit all budgets.
