History buffs will be delighted by St. Albans, which has a deep and rich history that stretches back to Roman times. Stay at a hotel or guesthouse in St. Albans and have a world of interest right on your doorstep.
St. Albans today is a thriving market town and a handy base for commuters to London. However, its slick modern appearance and Green Belt credentials belie its exotic past, which puts it right at the heart of English history and some of its most stirring events. St Alban's was a regional capital of ancient England and later developed into a major Roman settlement before taking on ecclesiastical importance during the Middle Ages. During the bloody Wars of the Roses two major battles were waged here in an attempt by both sides to legitimise their right to the crown. You can still see some of the damage done to the buildings during the vicious street-to-street fighting. Stay at a historic Hertfordshire hotel or B&B and explore Britain's blood-soaked past up close and personal in St. Albans.
Part of the appeal of St. Albans is that you can reach the town within two hours from London. Its historic sites are within easy walking distance of each other and between them cover about two millennia of British history. This was the ancient Roman city of Verulamium, and from the ongoing theatre excavations it's a short walk along the lakeside to the historic High Street and the magnificent cathedral. Tudor buildings and a clock tower dating from 1412 are just some of the other many attractions in St Albans which visitors can enjoy from their local Hertfordshire hotel base, and of course London is just a few stops away by train.
Any visitor to Hertfordshire will be impressed by the sheer number of attractions here, and the variety of the county's famously beautiful landscapes. For sports enthusiasts there are popular destinations such as the Lee Valley White Water Centre, and wildlife enthusiasts will love the Paradise Wildlife Park.
