The river rises near Donhead St Mary east of Shaftesbury, and flows 32km to Wilton and through the park of Wilton House after where it joins the River Wylye. After a couple of miles the combined rivers join the River Avon close to Salisbury Cathedral. From Upper Chicksgrove - about 4km upstream - to Wilton the river is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
