Not so dog friendly

Pros: The location
Cons: Put us away from the noisy boiler room
Location: Plenty to do in the area, found an amazing dog friendly cafe called Toast it was amazing well worth a visit with or without a dog
The hotel itself was in a good location was generally clean, the problem we had was we had taken the dog and the room was situated on the first floor next to a stairwell which smelt disgusting, the room must have been located near a boiler room and the noise was horrendous it went on constantly, I realise the hotel has to allocate certain rooms for dog use but for this reason won't be using it again

Dirty damp old hotel

My colleague was originally given a room that smelt really badly of damp and mould and had black mould growing in the window, was then moved to a different room that had a very lumpy old bed, but was a vast improvement on the first which would probably have made her ill. My room had a bed made rock but didn't smell too bad. The linen and bathroom seemed clean but the room in general seemed grubby. The bathrooms had recently been refurbished but the towel rail had been pulled of the wall and mould spots were beginning to show on the ceiling. The staff in the bar and restaurant seemed very friendly and helpful but again it had a slight grubby cheap feel despite seemingly being referbed recently. Overall I would say this hotel has seen better days I suspect its understaffed particularly in the housekeeping department. I would generally expect more from a Mecure.

Can't trust the staff

Pros: Nothing after seeing my bank statement
Cons: Re training on how to take payment
I have been charged twice for my staff and a week later waiting for a response from the hotel and Expedia. Now am opening a dispute with my bank to get a refund! Shocking incompetence that my card was debited twice and on separate days for a 1 night stay

Clean, convenient town centre hotel

Pros: Location, amenities,
Good clean, tidy hotel. Convenient, easy to find location. The staff were very helpful, particularly the receptionist on duty helped with check in mix up. The food is also varied and well worth sampling. Would recommend this hotel.

Pros: reception; room
Cons: Lack of served beverages at breakfast; plates not heated; uncooked sausages; runny scrambled egg
Location: did not stay long enough to require local amenities but locl shop did not sell the Daily Telegraph!
Quality of breakfast did not live up to the hotel's appearance and reception

New hotel with clean rooms but thin walls

Pros: Clean rooms and very accessible.
Cons: Sound insulation in rooms. Improve breakfast offering. Soya milk.. Train greeters at breakfast to help guests not treat them like they're a problem.
Location: St Helens RFLC is on your doorstep. Easily accessible form M62.
See above BUT walls are paper thin. Could hear the guy next door coughing as if he was in bed next to me. Very disturbing!!! No soya milk for breakfast. Only scrambled eggs (that contain cow's milk which I can't tolerate) with cooked options. In fairness, when I pointed this out, they did offer me fried eggs instead. Greeter at the breakfast room was indifferent / borderline rude to me when I expressed mild frustration at their being no soya or cow's milk alternative. Clearly thought this was a life choice and not a medical condition.

I have used Mercure Hotels on several occasions and found them to be good value for money. This was not the case with Mercure St Helens. Due to poor weather (?) the TV's on one side of the building were not working and remain unfixed for duration of stay. Had to order room service from reception as phone in room not working and when it did finally arrive (nearly an hour later) half the food was missing! First world problems I know but you did ask.

Nightmare stay

I use this hotel frequently and have always been extremly satisfied. This time I awoke at 02.30 am in a bed of sweat. The thermostat was set at 29.5C ! I could not lower the temperature as the control buttons did not work and the window was locked shut. Switching it off only increased the temperature. I was awake most of the night. On complaint the staff responded excellently, refunding the charge and giving me a coffee. However they were aware of a problem with the air conditioning prior to my stay.
