Pocket Guide: Great Yarmouth

Norfolk has always been one of the UK's favourite holiday destinations. From the unique Norfolk Broads to the picturesque northern coastline, there's something for every kind of visitor. One of the county's most popular resorts, though, lies on the east coast at Great Yarmouth. The town has been a holiday resort since 1760, meaning it's had plenty of time to develop into one of the country's premier seaside destinations. With so many excellent hotels in town - from friendly, independent B&Bs to well-known brands - it couldn't be easier to plan a memorable holiday in this famous seaside town.

The Golden Mile

Of course, the main attraction in Great Yarmouth is the seaside itself. The so-called Golden Mile is home to an array of exciting attractions, suitable for all the family. The main event is the beach, which is straddled by a pair of piers, packed with fun things to see and do all year round.

The amusement arcades along the seafront give the resort a traditional feel and are great fun for youngsters. Elsewhere, there are plenty of places to eat and drink in the glorious summer sun.

All Manner of Attractions

Understandably, the seafront takes centre stage in the summer months, but when things cool down in winter, Great Yarmouth still has a great deal to offer holidaymakers. One of the most popular sights is the Tollhouse, which claims to be the oldest civic building in the United Kingdom. The fascinating building (including some dungeons!) dates back to the 13th Century.

The market place (another of the town's favourite attractions) also dates to around the 13th Century. It remains one of the busiest in the country and is spread around the town centre, throughout the pretty alleyways and streets.

Hotels around Great Yarmouth

As it's such a popular holiday destination, it's hardly surprising that Great Yarmouth boasts one of the best selections of hotels in Norfolk. Visitors have their pick of everything from family-run guesthouses to opulent and imposing seafront hotels.

Decoy Barn is ideal for those seeking some peace and quiet, while the decadent Nelson Hotel offers the traditional Victorian seaside experience.
