Pocket Guide: Whitby

The rural and historical country of North Yorkshire is top of the list for many holidaymakers making plans to travel in the United Kingdom. Boasting several National Parks, a wide-scope of exciting family attractions and a healthy smattering of bustling market towns, there's plenty to get excited about.

One of the most popular destinations in North Yorkshire sits on the coast of the North Sea, at Whitby. The delightful seaside town has something to please everyone, from inquisitive kids to hard-core history buffs. To round it all off, Whitby also houses some of the finest hotels in North Yorkshire.

An Engrossing Seaside Resort

Whitby isn't only picturesque, it's also packed with plenty of things to see and do. Its gorgeous position, looking out over the North Sea, has made it a popular holiday destination since the 18th Century, but it was the building of a steam railway in 1839 that really cemented the seaside resort as a place to be seen.

Today, the major attractions in Whitby include Whitby Abbey, the pristine sandy beach and the working harbour, which is lined with small shops and places to eat and drink. Also, the North York Moors National Park is just a few miles away, providing ample opportunity to strap on your walking boots and explore the county on foot.

Inviting B&Bs

This small and friendly town offers a plethora of varied accommodation options, but its the selection of bed and breakfasts that lures in most of the visitors. Many of them are family run, and housed within pretty period buildings close to the water's edge.

Sander’s Yard B&B is a three-star offering, right by the banks of the River Esk. It's also just minutes from Whitby Beach. There's a 24-hour front desk, free breakfast and WiFi throughout the property.

Rural Guesthouses

With the stunning Yorkshire Moors so close by, many visitors to Whitby will be keen to stay out in the sticks. Fortunately, the National Park is where many of the county's finest hotels lie.

The Old Rectory is a pretty four-star guesthouse in the heart of the Moors. There's a hearty breakfast served up each morning and some barbecue grills out in the garden, great for making the most of the summer sun.
