One night in downtown San Jose
My wife and I spent one night here while waiting for a flight home. We were looking to get a feel for downtown and not just stay in a suburban chain. Hotel is definitely not your cookie cutter US chain hotel. It is in the heart of downtown, close to the Plaza and the pedestrian mall and all the activity you would expect with this sort of location. One local person described the area as "sexy, but not in a good way". Another warned to make sure I kept my wallet in my front pocket. The drop off from the cab at the hotel was odd, as there is no real ready access from the street. We had to walk in through a parking garage, and got accosted by a street beggar along the way. Our cab driver was very nice and helpful, and the hotel staff were efficient but a bit stiff and impersonal. Don't expect everyone to speak fluent English or to be able to make change for US dollars. But the Costa Rican people we talked with were very cordial and the overall environment downtown was friendly with lots of families walking around.
The hotel room itself was spacious and clean and surprisingly quiet given it is on a busy street and only 6 floors tall. The hotel restaurant was nothing special for dinner, and the complimentary breakfast was perfectly serviceable but again nothing special. Overall, it was a fair price (less than half of the big name US chains) for what we got.
