We spent five nights at this well equipped, very clean cottage in the woods a short walk from the Namequoit river, which empties into the bay. Very quiet area, not far from everywhere you’d like to go on the Cape. There are no water views, which is not evident from the photos posted on the rental website.
Besides that, there were a few other cons, mainly having to do with communication. Upon our arrival the house was very clean, but we found the trash cans and recycle bins stuffed full. When we called our rental agent, they were very responsive, but being Sunday of Labor Day weekend no one came to take the trash until the next day. There was a broken lamp in one of the bedrooms. I took a photo of it and also called the rental agent. The lamp was hanging together in pieces, and looked to be dangerous, We set it aside, but no one came to remove it the whole time we were there. A short walk down the driveway to the water brought us to the dock. But we were unsure if we could bring down chairs, or leave kayaks at the waterfront, as there were no instructions regarding the use of the dock, and there was a house and a garage close by. In the middle of our stay we met the owners of the next-door property, who also own the cottage and assured us we were able to use the dock ay any time and leave kayaks chairs etc. there.
Umbrella on the porch was very old and rusty and needed to be replaced. Kitchen was efficient and well supplied. We asked to leave later than the 9 AM check out, and our rental agent was very gracious in allowing us to stay till 11. All in all, the rental was a very good value for the money.
One other caveat is that we received emails the morning of our departure requesting us to submit five star reviews. The email implied that anything other than five star reviews would cause problems for the rental agency. I responded that we had a very good stay but was not a five star stay. I rely on clear and honest assessment of a property when considering a rental, and don’t feel renters should be pressured to submit five star reviews.
With that said we had a wonderful week as a five person family in a lovely
well equipped property, and we would rent there again. Kayaking the waters of Pleasant Bay is an amazing experience, we saw seals every time we went out, and all manner of water birds. Overall it was a week which we thoroughly enjoyed.
