Very impressive facade, but rooms...

Posted 06-Nov-2015
Pros: Very helpful and polite staff. Bars and restaurants look lovely. they served free coffee in the bar area
Cons: Can only comment on the room sizes as it was a fleeting visit. Would like to return some time, but would check with them room details before booking
Location: Everything you need nearby, from shops to restaurants, to beach. Great location
Stayed one night at the hotel for our daughter's graduation. At reception we were advised we had already checked into our rooms, which was a bit confusing as we hadn't! Staff were very polite, but it took nearly 20mins to eventually check into our rooms. The main areas of the hotel are very grand and quaint. However the rooms were a great disappointment, I think the corridor was wider than the rooms. They were doubles but were extremely small, in one room we had to move the bedside table in order to be able to open the single wardrobe. Really speaking the rooms should have been singles due to their size. Overall a lovely hotel, but disappointed with the rooms, they have crammed too many into small spaces.

Good location hotel with victorian decoration.

I booked a double room. The room was on the west wing where it's very difficult to find. Although the roomis small but comfortable enough for us.

Well it is close to the sea...

Posted 04-Oct-2015
This hotel was advertised as lovely four star hotel close to the sea. When we arrived we were surprised to find the exterior more than a little run down, but you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, right? Wrong!! Once we arrived we were told that we'd have to go and find our own parking at the nearest pay and display because the hotel car park was full! 4* amenities right there! Even if there was a space for us, it would have set us back £20 for a single night. Not a good start. The interior of the hotel was dated, but looked clean if nothing else. The room however was beyond disappointing. I was almost thankful for the total lack of windows so I wouldn't have to see the room, unfortunately the light bulbs worked... After a horrible nights sleep in a bed which must have had the thinnest pillows and duvet possible I started my day tired and sore. The only silver lining was after getting ready in the sub standard bathroom I couldn't see how much of a state I looked because oddly the mirror is hung at waist height, giving me a nice view of my shoulders to my knees. Useful. It is close to the beach though...staff we rude not to mention the obnoxious guests in rooms either side. I'd pay to avoid sleeping here again!!

Renovation required

Posted 16-Sep-2015
Pros: location, near beach. Cons: in desperate need of a renovation. The west wing rooms are more like uni dorms. Dark, dingy and smell terrible. Our room smelt so terribly of cigarettes we paid for an upgrade to an ocean view. The ocean view room was much nicer in comparison. Breakfast was basic. Staff weren't helpful.

Close to Beach and Town

Posted 15-Sep-2015
Pros: Great location, close to the sea and the town Public car park next door
Cons: Staff training, re-furbishment, better signs. Ambiance created though music, plants and things which the modern traveller would expect to experience.
Unfortunately, my experience of staying at this faded grand hotel, were not good. After the long wait to check in, it took a good 10 minutes to find the room through the maze of corridors and lack of signage. My room was in the West Wing and was very small. The dining room was huge, soul less and the music was Heart FM complete with adverts as you dined... Payment is taken before you see the food and sit down. Drinks must be paid for as you eat, yes, you have to put your cutlery down to find your purse. In fairness, the food was basic but tasty. We only chose to eat here because we were in a hurry to be at an evening function. The early check out of 10am on a Sunday is a bit of a shocker, so is having housekeeping banging on the door at 9.25am... Felt quite rude. Breakfast needs to be paid for at reception apparently... The sleepy guy on breakfast duty was unsure of the cost or the procedure, so we didn't bother. The queue for check out was long. I don't plan to stay here again.

Hotel with pay for facilities

Posted 14-Sep-2015
Booked with hotel.com and when I pressed the book button I was told the hotel had put the price up £40, bad start. On arrival a member of staff told us our row of rooms were yet to be upgraded, room 233. Bathroom very old fashioned and mouldy. Forget all that lets have a swim, website says good leisure facilities included that appear FREE not so. Britannia then wants to charge you for a swim and a towel. We had come from the Royal Glen hotel in Sidmouth and when booked everything was free, stop being mean. Change my mind about you.
