I have been lucky enough to stay in quite a few very good hotels in Europe and North America as a result of copious amounts of business. The Cape Taj would certainly rank among the top 5 worldwide I have stayed in and quite frankly I would not even consider staying in another hotel if I go to Cape Town again. One of the strong features of the Taj group is the quality of their staff (I have used the Taj Lusaka on numerous occasions and here too the staff stand out). I liked the location which some may not - it was in the old town and so I thought it rather more real (and also perfectly safe) than the V&A Waterfront hotels which can be a bit blingy. An almost perfect hotel experience.

Everything perfect except despite 3 times asking the staff couldn't set my swipe card to work for the link door between hotel and conference venue. This was irritating as I understood that this would be convenient and was the reason I chose this hotel
Our second visit to this fabulous historical Hotel and we weren't disappointed.
The Hotel is in a lovely location beneath Table Mountain and opposite the peaceful Company Garden which offers a quiet alternative to busy Long Street.
Kloof Street is located at the rear entrance to the Hotel and here there are very good restaurants and shops. Kloof Street House has a great atmosphere and fab food.
The open top bus stop is outside the main entrance although users need to be aware that a Yellow Route has been introduced this year which goes past the Hotel. Not so good for anyone staying at the Mount Nelson as the last bus leaves the Waterfront at 5.20, not at all convenient. That said, the Red, Blue and Yellow Route buses offer a great way to see the whole of the City. The 2 day ticket is very good value and includes free guided walks and other discounted tours.
The reason that I have marked down the room comfort is because the bathroom was cold. The fan was permanently on and when I asked how to turn it off I was told it was either on or off and if we wanted it off an engineer would make an adjustment so this is what we did.
The reason that I have marked down the Hotel Staff is that although they are delightful the service can be slow, particularly room service when it was necessary to make two or three requests before whatever we asked for actually appeared.
Both points not good for this Hotel but it is Africa! Definitely stay here !!
We had a very pleasant stay. I enjoyed the friendliness of staff, kitchen staff was more than accommodating at breakfast. We got more than we bargained for for that price. Location perfect, I just didn't like the R60 parking fee. I will definitely book there again!!!
The staff were very accommodating. The food was lovely. The facilities were good- we used the gym, dining (in room and restaurant). Fabulous views. Comfortable and spacious rooms. Beds were amazing. Will definitely be back.
My only negative was that we went in October and the pool was too cold to use.
So glad we chose the Hippo. The staff was fantastic and helped with taxis, our car rental and much more. The room was clean and comfortable and the hotel was in a perfect location for the sightseeing we wanted to do in Cape Town
Welcome to a hip and laid-back establishment which deserves its reputation for style, comfort and appeal. The 4-star Hippo …More
Pocket Guide: Cape Town Cape Town City Centre Hotels
An eclectic mix of African culture and European influence, the Cape Town city center is easy to explore on foot, and for a taste of local flavor visitors won't want to miss attractions like the bohemian Long Street or Greenmarket Square, which houses a popular market. Other attractions include the colonial Castle of Good Hope, St. George's Cathedral, and Company's Garden park.
