Cheshire is a popular holiday destination for visitors from across the country and abroad. For many of them, this beautiful county represents some of the best of English landscapes with its rolling pastureland and rising hills towards the Peak District, grazing dairy herds and Elizabethan half-timbered country piles. Others come to see the attractions of great cities such as Chester with its cathedral, walls and Roman remains. Whatever your reasons for visiting, there are some great accommodation options available, including Cheshire hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs of every description. Try visiting a sporting venue such as the Alexandra Stadium in Crewe for a change one afternoon.
The Alexandra Stadium was built back in 1906 but has been extensively redeveloped since the 1990s. Gresty Road, named from its address, is the home ground for the football club Crewe Alexandra and currently has a seating capacity of over 10,000. Crewe FC had originally played on the site of the Alexandra Recreation Ground a short distance to the north of the current stadium, but abandoned it during the 1895-96 season. Local venues including Sandbach then played host to the club until 1897, when it moved to the Gresty Road ground. This was demolished in 1906 to make way for a railway line and a new ground was built to the west of it. You can explore the eventful history of the club when you come here from your Cheshire hotel in the neighbourhood, and perhaps attend a match at the same time.
The Gresty Road Stadium, following various movements of the stands since its inception, as eventually completely rebuilt in the 1990s, with fully seated stands on all sides, bringing it in line with other clubs. As well as exploring the club's and stadium's history in the stadium shop you can also make a day of it and take a look around the wider area when you come here from your Cheshire hotel or guesthouse base. It's a lively region, and Crewe itself has many attractions such as its famous Railway Museum.
