Pocket Guide: 5 Stars Hotels in St. Petersburg
Visitors to St. Petersburg who like a bit of luxury won’t be disappointed. A good starting point is the grand Fabergé Museum housed within Shuvalov Palace, once famed for the society occasions held in its Grand Ballroom for over a thousand movers and shakers. The Fabergé Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of works by the famed jeweler; it showcases around 4,000 pieces of fine art and gold and silver decorative ornaments, as well as many of the renowned eggs. The highlight of the exhibit are nine Imperial Easter Eggs, each of which were presented as Easter gifts to the final two Tsar families.
St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Ballet, the oldest dance school in Russia, is recognized as one of the leading ballet companies in the world. The Mariinsky Theatre opened its doors in 1860, and since then some of the biggest names in classical music and dance have performed on its stage. From Anna Pavlova, who first danced Swan Lake’s Dying Swan, and Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky, who chose to premiere their works in the theatre, international big names are drawn to the Mariinsky, so pick up some tickets, enjoy a performance and marvel at the Imperial opulence of the building.
Fine Dining in St. Petersburg
For a meal fit for a Tsar, you don’t have too look far in St. Petersburg. From decadent caviar and iced vodka to the final word in exquisite Art Nouveau restaurants that hark back to Imperial days gone by, St. Petersburg has some exquisite fine dining. Palkin on Nevsky Prospekt has been serving the well-to-do since 1785, and now you can be entertained by dry ice cascading out of your ice bucket as you enjoy a meal to remember.
Luxury Hotels along Nevsky Propekt
Trendy bars and traditional restaurants line Nevsky Prospekt, St. Petersburg’s main avenue. It’s also the location of most of St. Petersburg’s five-star hotels, especially towards the end by St. Isaac’s Cathedral. The opulent area around Palace Square places you mere steps away from the Winter Palace and the Hermitage Museum. Many of the area's 19th-century mansions now house decadent hotels with views out over the River Neva.
