Set high upon eroded volcanic cliffs, Volterra is an austere walled town with spectacular views. Its well-preserved medieval core is full of historic buildings, but the archaeological finds in the splendid Etruscan Museum date back even further. Also worth a look is the Duomo, with its startling interior of striped walls and gilded ceilings. A flag-hurling competition and a crossbow tournament are regular summer fixtures.
