“Wild Atlantic coast of Barbados”
Our hearts sank as the taxi brought us down the access track, past a busy and extensive building site for a new condo being carved out of the hillside next to the hotel. However, there was a warm welcome (and free rum punch) from the manager, Roger, and it turned out that the site was neither visible nor audible from our room. We had 224, with a balcony giving views both north and south along the Atlantic coast. We looked down on to the crashing surf, which drowned all other noise. This hotel is excellent if it is what you want. It is fairly simple, slightly drab, but in a superb location and provides a marvellous base for walking, along either the beaches or the disused railway, the bed of which still exists along much of the coast; even where it is eroded, there is a track around the fall. The Expedia booking indicates "breakfast not included", but in fact the hotel provides an adequate selection of cereals, croissants and coffee for free. We never took lunch, but the dinners were inexpensive and enjoyable, albeit from a limited menu. Like our room, the restaurant overlooked the ocean, and with a full moon and warm breeze was a very romantic spot. The swimming pool is oddly shaped, but just large enough for two people to swim decent lengths, if they have it to themselves. During most of our stay there were few other visitors, so we did. If you like the wild and the remote, then this hotel is excellent. As we did, stay one week here and then another elsewhere in luxury.
“Restful Holiday”
We stayed at the hotel in late April/early May for the 3rd time just before the hotel was scheduled to be re-roofed and painted. Again we really enjoyed the staff, location and peace. The natural beauty of the east side of the island where the hotel is located is a joy to explore on foot or in a car and many of the best attractions are within a 10 minute drive from the hotel. These include Harrison Caves, Andromeda Gardens, The Flower Forest, Welchman Hall Gully, Orchid World, Gun Hill Signal Station, Codrington College, Farley Hill National Park, St. Nicholas Abbey and miles of east coast beaches which are almost abandoned. In addition, it is only a 30 minute drive to all the sites on the west side of the island where most of the tourists hang out. We have always enjoyed our stay at the New Edgewater and we have enjoyed all the staff. Our room has always been clean and we have enjoyed the meals we have eaten there. This hotel is very reasonably priced in a country where accommodation is generally very expensive and so I believe the hotel provides good value for the money. However, if you want to hang out with all the other tourists, stay on the west side of the island, especially between the airport and Bridgetown.
“Once it was a great hotel”
The biggest advantage of the hotel is that it is situated in the most picturesque part of the island. If you go to the any local crafts’ store in Barbados, you'll see Bathsheba's landscape on many items with the probability of 9/10. The hotel is located on the cliff, and it has the best view from the restaurant. The restaurant although was not the best, the cook was very lazy there. It is usually open till 7pm but when we came once at 6:30pm the waitress said that the cook had already gone home and she did not take our order. General impression is that nobody was taking care of the hotel for a long time, but the rooms were clean and the pool was open. On the East of the Barbados there are just two hotels and this is not a popular tourist spot because there are no beaches suitable for swimming there. Probably that is why the hotel was half empty and not well maintained. But Bathsheba was a great green village; it was a good place to feel some taste of Barbados. We were travelling by local bus to the beach every day. It was fun ride, like roller-coaster ride through the jungle. Also we liked the people, most of them were very friendly, all spoke good English, and it was easy to travel through the country. But note that the prices for everything there are double of those in the US. The bus is cheap the rest is very expensive.
“Beautiful Location”
the location of the hotel was beautiful and very picturesque, however, if you are after a white-sand beach with all the conveniences (such as sun-beds and umbrellas), go to the West coast of the island. It is not difficult to get there from Bathsheba even on public transport, but still a bit of a journey (about 45-60 mins each way). Staff in the hotel are fantastic, could not have been more welcoming, friendly and helpful! The food was delicious and very fresh! The room was clean and with the a/c and a little fridge, which was handy. The pictures on the website do not do the hotel justice as I thought it was much nicer in real life. The ocean front location is absolutely stunning and having your meals/drinks to the sound of the ocean waves is extremely enjoyable and romantic. If you are into surfing or just splashing about in the water, this would be perfect for you! I would go back there again in a heartbeat as the value for money was outstanding and the people there just made all the difference as well!
“"Breath taking views"”
The hotel is older and out the way and could definitely use some TLC but the view and the peace and quiet made the comfort issues bearable. There is a wonderful park down the beach with a quaint little bar where you can hang out on Sunday's and have a blast. The hotel is on the remote side of the island but for a $1 you can catch a bus into town. Just be careful if you are taking the bus to be back by nightful because its very dark and there is no lighting on the trail back to the hotel. The hotel staff was friendly and they corrected an issue I had with my shower as soon as the maintenance guy came in. The hotel restaurant keeps strange hours so you are forced to eat really early or walk down to the Round House who has great food, great service, and a beautiful view. I can say I got what I went for peace and quiet and I felt safe at the hotel. If you are going to participate in activities this is not the hotel of choice unless you are renting a car.
“Very Quiet Area”
We found the east coast to be very quiet, compared to the west coast of Barbados. If you are looking for some real rest and relaxation, this is the place to stay. All of the people were very nice and very helpful in helping you get around the Island. Definatley not the place to stay if you like to be active all the time. Go to the west coast for that.
“Can't wait to return !”
The hotel was exactly what I expected from reading the reviews. The view was incredible ! My boyfriend is a surfer and we couldn't have been at a better spot. The staff was pleasant and wanted to meet your needs. The hotel was quiet and that was just what we were looking for. The beach is not crowded at all. We are looking to return next year !
“Would definitely stay at this hotel again”
Spent a weekend at the hotel. The room was clean. Didn't like the twin beds because they were in fixed positions and could not be brought together. The continental breakfast met our needs. We were gone during the day and the meal in the evening was excellent. Our room overlooked the ocean. The hotel is in a quiet location and if you wanted to travel around the island you would need a car or you could get taxi service which would be more expensive I think. I have stayed at different hotels in Barbados and this was excellent for the price. If you are looking for peace and tranquility, The New Edgewater is definitely the place to be. The beach on this side of the island and around the hotel is not ideal for swimming! I would definitely visit this hotel again!
“Great but eating was a problem...”
The property was what we were expecting and the staff was wonderful. However there is nothing to do at night. Nothing. The bar/restaurant closes at 8pm and the last order had to be in by 7pm. We almost felt like we were back in college living in the dorms and had to make it to the cafeteria before they closed. The food was good but I would have liked a little more selection. I think there should be a menu of items that are served at anytime or at least a little later. Like flying fish sandwiches, hamburgers, salads, etc. We were not always in the mood for a nice sit down dinner. I think this is important because there is no where else to get food past 8pm on the entire east side of the island. If you arrived back to the hotel at 8pm or later you were screwed and couldn't get any food or drink. I know the hotel prides it's self on being quiet but i think opening the bar and having something available to eat until at least 10pm would be a good change.
“Got exactly what we expected”
We booked a partial ocean-view room and we were closer to the ocean than we expected! It was nice to be close to the beach like that; we went on a stroll every morning on the beach, at sunrise before breakfast. The room (and the hotel in general) could have been cleaner (and better maintained) but the bed was clean and so was the bathroom. The AC worked extremely well, making our night sleeps very comfortable. A continental breakfast was served every morning. The very same thing was served every day and after a few, we started gettting tired of it. But the food was fresh and so was the coffee. Other than the inconvenience of the location (plus the lack of signs, making our route difficult), it was very comfortable for the price we paid. I would consider going back!
