“rio augustu paysandu”

dinghy hotel - hallway rug is very dirty and smelly. no amenties to speak of. Shower overflows. Breakfast is the bare minimum. Most hotel staff do not speak English and cannot help you in getting around Rio. Location is good neighborhood close to Metro, safe to walk around - lots of stores and restaurants close by. But be aware Rio is expensive.

“A discovery”

I have been visiting Rio for years and I have always stayed in Flamengo, although in a different hotel - when I started it was a budget option, but no longer and I did wonder about somewhere else - and found Augusto's Paysandu which fitted the bill perfectly. It is not luxurious, but you have all you need and therestaurant isa very good. I have given it full marks and it deserves them. The staff were also really pleasant. Flamengo is a safe neighbourhood with lots of restaurants and it has the metro which now runs all the way to Ipanema so you no longer have to battle with the Rio buses, although that is an experience not to be missed. Not that they are what they were. People who go to Rio tend to utter the magic words Copacabana, well the Sugar Loaf is not on Copacabana, neither is Corcovado nor are most of the places you will want to see. I have stayed at the Copacabana Palace but so what. The Flamengo beach is good, certainly as good as the Inpanema and Copacabana ones, and these days it is patrolled. So go to Augusto's, it is convenient for the metro, for the Largo Machado, which is a nice place to have a caiparinha, and you will pass lots of enticing eating places and neighbourhood bars.

Area recommendations
I have probably said it all in the piece about Augusto's. I like the Adega Portugalia on Largo Machado, which is a neighbourhood bar with mean caiparenhas and a decent restaurant as well. The weigh your food places along the Catete road are good, and the gardens a nice place to rest those tired feet, while the craft shop in the little craft museum at the side of the Palace is pretty good for souvenirs. I know that it sounds smart to say you lived in Ipanema or onCopacabana, but be different. You can always go and eat there - because there are good restaurants, especially in Ipanema. The extesion of the metro is a great boon, although it does shut down around 11.30 I think, but taxies are not costly, so getting home is no problem. Downtown is a no go area at night, but during the day it is fine and Cinelandia should not be missed. It is only two stops from Largo Machado and on it is the municipal theatre opera house - go if something is on, take the tour if not, because it is splendid.
When to go
I would go in May or September - off season is best.
Getting around
Use the bus. If you are intend on doing all Brazil then fly from one place to the next. Otherwise the bus stations are good, the roads are fine, the buses a lot more comfortably to sleep on than the plane you took to get to Brazail and you don't need to speak more than yoiur destination and have the date written down because they will then turn the computer screen to you and you can read everything and pick your seat. Overnights are very well organised with stops for the usual reasons, although there is a loo on the bus, and for meals.
What to pack
As little as possible and preferabky easily washable. Lots of socks, vests. You will sweat. Take a small umbrella. It does raid. Sting relief. You will probably get bitten. And an adaptor for your electrical things. I am not going to do it, but there is probably something to be said for having your own small laptop. And take you credit cards - Visa is a boon. You can pay for pretty well everything with the card and it takes all the hassle of cambio searching out of the equation.
Must see
The obvious - but those apart Paraty is gorgeous, so is Goias Velho, and Sao Miguel.

“Friendly & professional staff in a great location”

From check in to check out we had a great experience. We'd booked a triple room and it was clean and comfortable. The staff were extremely friendly and willing to help with directions, suggest restaurants etc. The buffet breakfast was great with tasty food and a broad range of options. Overall for the price we paid I could not be more satisfied with this hotel. It's located in the Flamengo district which was a nice change from the hustle and bustle of Copacabana. The beach is a 5 minute walk and there is a good selection of restaurants nearby.
