“Fantastic hotel, a little rough around the edges”
This is a great hotel & for the money I think it's got to be the best on the island. It's on the north side of the island & has it's on section of beach which is very quiet & the hotel restaurant is literally on the beach making it a lovely place to eat or have a cocktail at happy hour. The south side of the island has a much larger but busier beach & there are also a number of much more expensive hotels elsewhere on the island that have more private sections of beach but you pay a lot more for them. There are a few other hotels & bars along the north side which have bars & restaurants too which are in easy walking distance of the hotel & have a great relaxed atmosphere & much cheaper food. Overall for what we were looking for i.e. a relaxed couples holiday with a quiet beach & a few cocktails in the evening I couldn't fault it. The only very slight negative was the apartment was a little rough around the edges, nothing serious mainly the floor was concrete & badly painted plus the lights only seemed to work when they felt like it, also the water ran brown for quite some time, I guess it was rusty pipes but we certainly didn't bother using the kettle as there was no way we were drinking it even boiled. The bed was comfy & clean though & from outside the hut looked idyllic so the negatives in no way spoiled our enjoyment.
“Rested but not relaxed...”
When Koh Samed and our hotel came into view from the ferry, it was less than impressive. The hotel is located barely 50m from the jetty where we got off. Close up, the beach was dissappointing. The sand was gritty, there was a noticeable amount of rubbish and boats and fishing nets were close to the hotel. I was not tempted to swim in the ocean at all. Some of the dissappointment wore off when I saw the pool and the cabins. No major complaints with our cabin. One good point is that the hotel is fairly isolated. You have to walk about 30 mins (quite tough in the heat and humidity of December) or take a scooter or a taxi to the main town. The hotel staff at Samed Club were friendly and helpful, not many speak good English though. The breakfast buffet in the morning is OK (score: 5 out of 10). Samed is overpriced (especially the hotel restaraunts), the taxi company (having a virtual monopoly) charges exhorbitant fees. A scooter or ATV is not recommended if you are travelling with a family of young kids (as we were). After our stay, we left rested and relaxed but not satisfied. I think that Samed Club is more of a 3 star hotel, rather than 4 star.
