Frightening

Posted 05-Feb-2015
Pros: Nothing
Cons: Everything
I arrived at the hotel quite late, the main door was open and the lights were on, however there was no reception and no reception desk, actually it looked like the place hadn't been used for a long time, there was items dumped everywhere, dirty bedding hanging over the banister and no one was anywhere to be seen. I walked through the back and the side thinking a may had the wrong entrance, but it got worse. I left the building, jumped in my car and legged it, sleeping in the car was far more appealing.

A rave from the past

Posted 30-Jul-2014
Pros: Everything
Cons: Don't change a thing
If you enjoy experiencing time-warps then Cleeve House, at Seend, on the outskirts of Melksham, Wiltshire, is a must. An almost gothic pile to the eye, it exudes an old-fashioned ambience that provides a genuinely warm and welcoming glow throughout it's hallowed corridors. Honestly, at one time (before the 80s were counted out) this characterful type of lodging was scattered liberally throughout this green and pleasant land. It rested, contentedly midst the burgeoning four star noisy hotel chains and the better to be avoided genteel private guest houses that were really no better than expensive B&Bs. But alas, many have succumbed to oppressive health and safety laws and spiraling labour costs. Unfortunately, and due to, no doubt, the Cleeve's popularity, we were only able to rest our weary bodies for a single night. Though a night of deep and welcome sleep it was, with an enchanting morning's view across a bucolic landscape, and a breakfast fit for a king. Go, go, go to The Cleeve. You will not be disappointed.

Quirky Victoria 'Folly-style' B&B Guest house

Posted 03-Jun-2014 on Hotels.com
The house is amazing, built in 1870 in mixed Medieval styles. It is used as a wedding venue (will external catering) and run as a B&B by a couple. It is very reasonably priced and breakfast was good. The location on Trowbridge road is good and it is only a 10 minute walk to the Barge Inn for dinner. (Book - it is excellent)

Very welcoming...

Just an overnight stay as had a party in Melksham. Quite a lot of stairs to get to the room, but the room was comfortable - nice beds. Good and friendly service and nice breakfast. About 5 miles outside Melksham town - taxi pretty expensive.

A pleasant stay in a house with lots of character

Posted 11-May-2014
Pros: The friendliness of the owners, the character of the hotel and grounds, and the breakfast.
Cons: As mentioned above, the ensuite bathroom needs updating.
Location: The location is very good. Close to the Kennet & Avon Canal, and many pretty villages.
We were greeted warmly by the owners on our arrival, and they showed us to our room was very comfortable. \\our only adverse comment would be that the ensuite bathroom, which was down a small staircase, could do with a little updating. The house itself and the grounds are lovely and we can see why it would be a popular wedding venue. It was only a one night stay on this occasion, but enoyable nonetheless.

A grand bed and breakfast

Posted 05-May-2014
Although it looks like a country house hotel, it isn't - it's a bed and breakfast situated in a country house. That is no criticism - it prices for a b&b, so go along expecting one and be pleasantly surprised.

Lovely old building, room had lots of character and was warm, spacious and comfortable, very kind proprietors, good breakfasts and decent location with several good places to eat within 5 minutes drive. Definitely recommended.
