“I wish I could live there!”

This was my sixth visit and the Quinta do Monte has not lost any of its various charms, even in these straitened times. The staff are all polite, helpful, and attentive - they always address you by name and remember if you have stayed before. There was a complimentary bottle of fizz chilling in a bucket in my room, along with a basket of fruit and a half bottle of, naturally, madeira. It is always so peaceful in the beautiful gardens - I like to go to sit outside the chapel after dinner and watch the sun go down over the sea. The menu is excellent and not pricey, with lots of new things to try. I cannot recommend the hotel enough.

Area recommendations
Please note that there areTWO cable cars - one from Funchal to Monte, and one from Monte to the botanical gardens (don't confuse these with the Monte Palace Gardens!). There are also the free municipal gardens - all three of them are worth a visit, as are the Blandy Gardens (Palheiro). The Quinta Do Monte also has lovely gardens with a kiosk for drinks and light lunches. Also in Monte is the famous toboggan run - I've not been on it, but looks fun. It's quite expensive and only takes you half way down the valley to Funchal - they then get you to take a taxi down, or back up - so make sure you realise the expenses beforehand!

“Looking forward to returning”

We have stayed at the Quit do Monte twice and found it to be the ideal hotel for exploring the island. It is small and friendly and situated in one of the best locations on the island- several gardens and lavada walks are close by and the cable car gives access to the main town, Funchal. The staff are friendly and efficient and made us feel welcome. We will use this hotel again next year when we visit Madeira.

“Madeira amazing.”

We had a lovely stay in this hotel. Some parts rather tired eg bathroom floor tiles, and corridor carpets. Pool freezing all the stay - waiting part, but we went to a sister hotel (VIsta - fantastic pools) on the courtesy bus, twice. Service and staff lovely, food great. NO KETTLE in room. Monte is high up so sometimes cloud but very good bus service to Funchal where much hotter (and humid sometimes) so it was nice to sleep in the cool. Had french windows open all night onto balcony which all rooms have. Had a really fun holiday. Cable car and tobaggans just outside the hotel take you down to town as does bus (cheaper). Food on the street in the town is good value. Hotel has lovely gardens to stroll around, also the Monte Palace Gardens just outside - amazing. Lunch in the garden of hotel eg toasted sandwich, or in Monte square cafe - lovely local bread.

Area recommendations
Monte was a great area to stay. The sister hotel - Vista - was more up market with fantastic indoor/outdoor pools and sitting area. The hotel area in Funchal past the marina and park was rather scruffy and noisy with traffic and I wouldn't like to stay there. I think you are better a little out of the main town.
When to go
We went in September. Lovely temperature and quiet but if you want to see the flowers at their best go April/May
Getting around
The buses are really good up and down to Monte.
What to pack
If you want to do Lavarda walks pack long trousers and walking shoes/sandals. Otherwise in September a light cardigan is sufficient, possibly a light roll up mac.
Must see
The market in Funchal.
Outdoors or beach
No beaches in Funchal. Theer are some else where but we didn't hire a car - thank goodness. Roads very narrow and steep and twisting.

“Well worth the visit”

Good comfortable hotel set in great gardens in Monte above Funchal. Excellent views, friendly staff and comfortable rooms - only quibble was lack of tea/coffee making facilities in room.

Traveller's tip
First time driving there - go in the day (not at nigh as I did) -- the roads are narrow and steep. Small restaurant just outside the hotel gate was good value.

“Paradise Found!”

When I first visited Monte I took tea in the wonderful hotel gardens which are open to the public, and noticed the hotel. Having stayed there twice since, I can honestly say it is the most tranquil and civilised place to be on holiday! The food is very good, and not too expensive. The staff could not be more friendly and helpful - they even remembered me by name from my first visit. I have just booked to go again next year. If you want peace and tranquility, Monte is the place to go - and it is not 'soulless' as one reviewer said, just devoid of the noisy beach crowd and rowdy night life. Sitting quietly in the gardens after dinner and watching the lights of the city below: sheer heaven!

Traveller's tip
The Tropical gardens which cascade down the valley are wonderful, but don't miss the (free) botanical gardens in Monte (wind your way down to them on the left hand side of the church). There's also the Jardim Botanico which has great views (as you come out of the Funchal cable car, turn right and a bit further on you come to another cable car.)

“Gardeners Heaven”

If you love your garden and gardening in general, this is the hotel for you. With our busy schedule we did not check the gardens out until towards the end of the holiday. We had no idea of the extent of the hotel grounds, the variety of the plants and the beautiful settings. Situated in Monte, adjacent to the toboggans the hotel is well outside Funchals hotel zone. This means transport is required to get into the city centre. Hotel buses are provided but the city bus service is quite good and discounted tickets are available in the town. The hotel restaurant is to die for. It is expensive but the quality is worth the price. (Eating out in Madeira is generally expensive anyway) Friendly and helpful staff helped make the stay one of our most memorable vacations.

Traveller's tip
Madeira is a walkers paradise, from the professional hill climbers to the Sunday afternoon stroller to the pub. For the mountain walks use a local guided tour The Lavada walks are fantastic and an absolute must. Levadas are irrigation channels that scar the island. Get a good book of which plenty are available on Amazon and a hire car. Bus services are not the best and taxis are expensive. A hire car will give you much more flexibility and you will be able to get to more of the remote walks.

“Mountain location”

Good hotel but mountain location makes it a bit isolated and subject to cloudy weather.

Traveller's tip
though the cable car is a fun way to travel up and down the mountain to Funchal its expensive - consider using taxis.

“Quinta do Monte”

One of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. The location is spectacular and the service is unsurpassed. The hotel is furnished with antiques and original artworks and has an indoor heated swimming pool. There are acres of tropical gardens to wander through with views down to the sea and the city of Funchal. For peace and quiet and a truly relaxing break, I highly recommend this hotel. We will be going back.

Traveller's tip
Check prices with taxis to and from Funchal, the cost can vary greatly. For seeing the island of Madeira we avoided the expensive tours, instead we bought a bus timetable from the Tourist Info and travelled independently on the same routes as the tours for just a few Euro.

“Excellent hotel”

Excellent hotel in all areas - though didn't eat a main meal in the restaurant where prices were very high.

Traveller's tip
Buy a GIRO multi-journey ticket (for the bus) as soon as possible. Buses from/to the hotel area are plentiful. You will probably need a taxi from the hotel to the airport but booking it in the town (they still pick you up from the hotel) was a lot cheaper than through the hotel.

“On Top of Funchal”
