“Could not fault”
Checking in was effortless, room was larger than expected and very clean and comfortable. All of the staff we met were helpful and always friendly - in particular the overnight barman who was an absolute delight. I would certainly recommend this hotel.
“Good location in Durham”
This was an old characterful hotel, somewhat labyrinthine in nature. The room was large and comfortable with ensuite containing 2 showers and 2 wash basins. I never heard a sound from the other guests. However, the room looked as if it hadn't been upgraded since the 1980s! But it was exceptional value for B&B. I will stay there again.
“Acceptable, but needs updating!”
The facilities are a bit dated and the hotel very noisey. Evertime water was turned on in another room the pipes would rattle and hum. Breakfast was poorly organised with the food quality at best acceptable.
“Great value for short rip to Durham”
Stayed for 1 night on business. Only negatives were very small bathroom (single room) and an antique TV with very few channels, and certainly the decor/fixtures and fittings were a little neglected. However, staff were efficient and friendly and the location was perfect for a wander around what is a beautiful city without needing mountaineering equipment - Durham is the steepest place I've ever been to! Car parking on site was also a huge bonus for a city centre hotel. Overall very good value for money for a business trip or short break.
“The Three Tuns, Durham”
In an ideal location for exploring the centre of Durham City, the staff at the Three Tuns were extremely helpful. We initially had to make two separate bookings as we had booked our room through two different web companies, but the duty manager was able to take care of this, allowing us to keep our original room. Breakfast was extremely tasty, if a little limited (cereal or Full English). The bar was small and cosy and well stocked with a wide range of single malt whiskys. The room itself was very comfortable but suffered from being a little warm, with no way to turn the heat down, and having a toilet that had a temperamental handle. However the shower and bath were excellent and despite some of these minor flaws, I would definitely recommend this hotel and plan to stay there again in future. One word of advice though - you may want to bring ear plugs as being in the centre of town, one tends to hear a lot of very refreshed students heading home late at night, and more than one or two ambulances...
“Very comfortable room. Breakfast freshly cooked to order and excellent quality.”
We have stayed at the three tuns before and will most likely stay there again when we next visit Durham. The staff were very friendly and accomodating to allow us to park our car for a couple of hours after checkout to allow us to go for a pleasant Sunday stroll around the city. Breakfast was excellent. The only minor negative about the hotel was that the hotel decor was looking a bit worn compared to our last visit. Nothing drastic more than a lick of paint and re-sticking a patch of wallpaper on our bedroom ceiling required.
“OK hotel but avoid the restaurant”
The accomodation was acceptable - nothing special but clean and well sited near the centre of the town. It looks terrible on he outside mind. If you get a room on the road side you may struggle to sleep with the window open. The restaurant however was a total disaster, so bad it was comical. A terse waiter that stank of cigarettes, food that had somehow skipped the food revival in this country and was hanging on to the 1970s school meal ethos. To summarise... anaemic chicken liver pate on rotten salad and sliced white bread; steak and ale pie which was a stew topped with pre-cooked puff pastry and amazingly the meat was dry (how is that possible?). I was the youngest by 30 years in the place and the only non-grey haired diner (all 3 other tables) so I guess it may be catering to others' taste but by far the worse experience in 20 years of eating out!!
