In Menorcas southeast corner, the characterful island capital perches high above a huge natural harbour. Architecturally Mahon is a mix of styles, its narrow streets and little squares well worth exploring. On the waterfront, restaurants serve the best island seafood while catamarans and glass-bottom boats ply pleasure cruises. Above, the Xoriguer gin distillery (open to visitors) is one of several reminders of British 18th-century colonialism.
