The south-eastern part of the Harz, dominated by the Kyffhäuser Mountains, attracts hikers and cyclists in summer and cross-country skiers in winter. To the south, the city of Nordhausen has a restored medieval centre and a fine 13th-century cathedral. Eight kilometres north is the Luftkurort (health resort) of Neustadt and the ruins of Hohnstein Castle. Sülzhayn, one of the most idyllic villages in the Harz, is 15 kilometres away.
