Hakone Gora KARAKU (ORIX HOTELS & RESORTS)

10/10 Excellent

"What can I say? This hotel is absolutely beautiful, the staff are so kind and helpful. They got a taxi organised for me and my partner at short notice to odawara station on our final day. The location is amazing and the private bath on the balcony of your room overlooking the hills is just breathtaking. We'll be back next year!"

Hakone Kowakien TEN-YU

10/10 Excellent

"This experience was excellent. We wish we had more time at the property! The staff was very kind and helpful. The language differences were not a problem either. The room was cute and the onsens were very well maintained. The dinner buffet was amazing!!!! Way better than what we were expecting. We definitely want to come back! Highly recommend. From the bus stop it is a walk up hill. This was a bit confusing. But once we figured out you could connect through the Hakone Kowakien Yunessun 箱根小涌園ユネッサン it made it much easier getting to the bus stops on the Hakone pass lines. There is also a bus stop for at the hotel on a different bus line. And free hotel shuttle buses to some places."

Hakone Ashinoko Hanaori（ORIX HOTELS & RESORTS）

10/10 Excellent

"The hotel setting is absolutely beautiful, the staff extra lovely and helpful, the breakfast and dinner included were fabulous . I chose a room without the lake view and would upgrade next time but pure was still lovely . The onsen was relaxing and cocktails overlooking the footpath great. It was a wonderful adventure from Tokyo to Hakone on the Romancecar train then the switchback train and cable cars to the hotel and good that a direct bus can take you back if time is short . The Hakone free pass is well worth it and includes the Pirate ship cruise , such fun. I would also recommend the amazing luggage delivery service . We had bigger bags sent from Tokyo to our next stop after Hakone being Kyoto, such an efficient system , so travelled light to Hakone but even so , we forwarded our bags from Hakone station to the hotel for a small fee, freeing us up for the journey there and allowing us to enjoy the Open Air Museum hands free . That place is well worth the visit . So lovely . All in all a memorable stay highly recommended ."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Senzuya?

The best area to stay in Senzuya is Hakone-Yumoto, which serves as the primary gateway to the Hakone region.

Hakone-Yumoto is a bustling hot spring town located in the mountains, easily accessible by train. It's the first major stop within Hakone and is known for its numerous ryokans (traditional Japanese inns), gift shops, and restaurants lining the Sukumo River. The main street, Onsen-dori, is particularly active, offering a taste of local culture and cuisine.

For couples seeking a relaxing and authentic Japanese experience, Hakone-Yumoto is an excellent choice. Many ryokans here offer private onsen (hot spring baths), exquisite kaiseki dinners, and often provide shuttle services to local attractions. Its direct train access makes day trips around Hakone, such as to Lake Ashi or the Hakone Open-Air Museum, very convenient.

Families will also find Hakone-Yumoto appealing due to its accessibility and the variety of accommodation options. There are many hotels with family-friendly facilities, and the town itself is easy to navigate, with plenty of places to eat and browse.

When is the best time to go to Senzuya?

The best time to visit Senzuya, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, is during the spring (April to early June) and autumn (late September to November) months.

Spring offers mild temperatures and clear skies, superb for exploring the region's natural beauty. This is when the cherry blossoms are in bloom, creating stunning scenery, particularly around Lake Ashi and the Hakone Open-Air Museum. It's a wonderful time for couples seeking romantic strolls and picturesque views.

Autumn also provides pleasant weather with comfortable temperatures and vibrant foliage, especially in the mountainous areas surrounding Senzuya. The changing leaves around Hakone Gora Park and along the hiking trails offer a spectacular backdrop. Travellers interested in outdoor activities and photography will find this season particularly appealing.

While summer (July and August) is warm and humid, it's also popular for its festivals and opportunities to enjoy the beaches along the coast.
