Thermal springs are well situated and super relaxing and the area around the hotel is beautiful. We ended up booking an extra night because we loved the area so much. Hakone is a beautiful town full of nature. It’s so green all around. The hotel has a great bakery coffee area where they hand make their breads. There is a bus stop down the end of the road which takes you everywhere. Pretty good location too, with a shuttle bus on demand to pop into town. The staff are outstanding - I was ill during my stay and they (and especially the wonderful Ken) could not have been kinder. However, this is seriously expensive for rooms that can only be described as Spartan - even for hard-core minimalists. Every wall in our rooms was scuffed, the bathroom smelled badly, and there was nowhere to hang or store clothing. We lived out of suitcases for four nights. The only dining option is a very expensive multi-course option which you must book well in advance - one evening we had nothing to eat and room service was unavailable. The idea that a 'wellness' retreat only offers foie gras options in the evening is a bit odd. The library lounge was one of the unique places. It had a bungalow space where you could lean back and chill. Also, there were a big audio device where you could listen to music and relax.
