Old traditional property - tired, faded grandeur but some refurbishment scheduled to start in the spring. Staff and location excellent. Room dated but other hotel areas comfortable. Get off bus at Hotel Mae stop. Overall would stay again due to character, grounds and service.
Fabulous 'historic' hotel! Note: this facility is NOT ADA compliant at all! Steep but short uphill driveway for those arriving on foot from the train and carrying luggage. The staff saw us dragging ours and ran out to help us bring luggage up. There is a conbini close by for breakfast foods and snacks if you don't want to eat in the $$$ hotel. Beautiful garden in the back. Good amenities (bath and coffee/tea). First rate service!

Pros: One of those rare, old world hotels. Beautiful setting with lovely Japanese garden. Excellent service. Very friendly staff.

Wonderful old character; however, in need of restoration and renovation. Hot springs pool ceiling had quite a bit of mold; scant mold in our bathroom. The bed was quite hard, but room very generous. Love the quaint common areas and gardens, but think (at least) the Forest Lodge where we stayed is due for renovation. The hotel staff was lovely. If you are into the old huge style hotel experience, you won't be disappointed, but not a good value for the rate.
